Imran remained seated on the bike while Dharmendra stood beside it. As the fuel tank was opened for refilling, Dharmendra allegedly took out a cigarette and attempted to light it. When petrol pump staff stopped him and warned that smoking was prohibited at the site, he allegedly became angry.
In a fit of rage, Dharmendra used a lighter to set the fuel nozzle pipe on fire. Flames immediately flared up and spread to the motorcycle’s fuel tank and the pump machine, creating panic at the petrol station. The two men, along with staff members, rushed away from the spot as the fire intensified.
Officials said a pump attendant reacted immediately by pulling away the fuel pipe and switching off the main fuel supply. The managed to control using the fire safety equipment available at the station, and extinguish the flames before the situation escalated.
Police said that some burning fuel splashed on the accused during the incident. The duo allegedly tried to flee but were caught by the pump staff, who then informed the police and filed a complaint.
Based on the complaint and CCTV footage from the petrol pump, Urla police arrested both accused. Inspector Rohit Mahelkar said a case has been registered under sections related to arson and endangering public safety.
