  • Incident began after a late-night scooter crash into a stationary taxi
  • Police detained the women; investigation into the violent disturbance is ongoing

A late-night collision in south Bengaluru escalated into a violent public disturbance after two heavily intoxicated young women allegedly launched a series of assaults, including an attack with a helmet, on a cab driver, intervening residents and the police officers sent to detain them.

The incident, which police say was fuelled by alcohol, occurred between 10.45 pm and 11.00 pm on Saturday on Sir M Visvesvaraya Road in Nayappanahalli. According to the official complaint, the two women — identified as Liza, 19 and Amran Mathew, 18 — were returning from a party on a scooter when they crashed into the rear of a stationary taxi.

The cab driver, 47-year-old Ahmed Gurkar, stated that after initially helping the pair, he asked for compensation for the damage to his vehicle. This request allegedly triggered an immediate and violent reaction from the intoxicated duo, who began abusing him before assaulting him. Gurkar claimed in his complaint that they struck him with their hands and a helmet and kicked him.

Their aggression quickly turned towards bystanders who gathered to help. As residents intervened, the situation spiralled out of control. To prevent their escape, Ahmed removed the key from their scooter. One of the women reportedly fled into a nearby restaurant, while the other was restrained by locals who had called the police emergency helpline.

The arrival of a Hoysala patrol vehicle failed to calm the situation. Officers reported that the women, visibly inebriated, continued to shout abuses and resist authority. Disturbing social media videos from the scene appear to corroborate this, showing the pair making obscene gestures, kicking those trying to restrain them and hurling relentless verbal abuse at the crowd.

Their confrontational behaviour persisted even during detention. A senior officer at the scene described a significant struggle, stating it took almost 15 minutes to get them into the police vehicle as they were not in a condition to listen to anyone.

Nearly 15 police personnel, including women staff, were required to bring the situation under control. Further footage shows one of the women continuing to shout abuse from inside the police vehicle.

Following complaints, a case was registered and the two students were taken into custody. Police confirmed the pair had been at a social gathering and were suspected to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. An investigation is ongoing to establish the full sequence of events.
