The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) secured a decisive victory on Thursday from the Pulivendula seat in the ZPTC by-election held on Tuesday. The seat is a stronghold of YSR Congress Party and former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.
According to Telugu TV channels, TDP candidate Latha Reddy secured 6,735 votes. YSRCP’s Hemanth Reddy lost his deposit, securing only 683 votes, while Congress and independent candidates polled less than 100 votes each.
Notably, the YSR Congress Party has traditionally dominated in the seat.
The ZPTC bypoll in Pulivendula began on a stormy note in Kadapa district on Tuesday as police took local YSRCP MP YS Avinash Reddy into custody. A YSRCP and a TDP leader were also put under house arrest.
YSRCP accused TDP supporters of orchestrating booth capturing, violence, and voter intimidation in collusion with the ruling coalition, police and officials. The YSRCP termed it a state-sponsored election hijack, accusing Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's NDA coalition government of allegedly using police force and allegedly mobilising rowdies to subvert democracy and prevent a free and fair mandate.
