In a gruesome incident in Madhya Pradesh's Damoh district, a 58-year-old man allegedly bludgeoned a 16-year-old boy to death in broad daylight and then consumed his blood and flesh, prompting horror among witnesses who filmed the macabre act on their mobile phones, according to news agency PTI.
The accused, identified as Gudda Patel, was arrested by police shortly after the incident that unfolded around 1.30 pm on Thursday in Samanna village, approximately seven kilometres from the district headquarters. The victim, Bharat Vishwakarma, a resident of Arthkheda, had arrived in the village to observe the Bhai Dooj festival with his married sister Diksha, India Today reported.
According to City Superintendent of Police HR Pandey, Patel ambushed the teenager from behind as he was stepping out. Witnesses told investigators that the accused first struck Bharat with an iron rod, knocking him to the ground and then repeatedly hit him with a hammer, causing fatal injuries. A relative who was accompanying the boy managed to escape during the assault, according to a PTI report.
What transpired next left onlookers petrified. Eyewitnesses claimed that Patel began drinking blood from the boy's head and appeared to attempt tearing flesh from the body. Several villagers recorded videos of the disturbing visuals on their phones, which later circulated locally and intensified public outrage.
Following the attack, Patel attempted to flee towards nearby agricultural fields, still wielding the rod and hammer. Local residents chased him and surrounded the area, pelting stones until police arrived at the scene and took him into custody. Officials said the accused behaved violently even as officers attempted to restrain him.
Bharat was rushed to the district hospital in Damoh, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Police are currently investigating a viral video that alleges Patel consumed a portion of the victim's brain and drank his blood. CSP Pandey confirmed to reporters that Patel has been arrested and that doctors are assessing his mental condition to determine the circumstances under which he committed the crime. The officer added that preliminary findings suggest the attack was unprovoked.
According to reports, authorities have revealed that Patel was previously jailed in connection with the murder of his wife and was released approximately two years ago after serving his sentence.
The victim's family, devastated by the brutal killing, has demanded the death penalty for the accused, PTI reported. There was no known enmity between Bharat and Patel, officials said, with family members maintaining that the teenager was simply going to his sister's residence for the Bhai Dooj ritual when the sudden assault occurred.
