The 2026 Renault Duster is making a comeback in India with the new-generation model all set to be unveiled today (January 26). The SUV was initially launched in the country in 2012. However, it was discontinued in 2022, following a string of underwhelming performances, so far as volumes are concerned. During the time it was gone, the mid-size SUV space, where it will enter, has undergone massive changes and witnessed the arrival of many new and powerful brands.
Although the Renault Duster started the mid-size SUV segment in India, it could not sustain the momentum following the launch of the Hyundai Creta in 2015. Its popularity diminished further following the introduction of another Korean model, the Kia Seltos, in 2019.
At present, the mid-size SUV segment is among the largest contributors to the passenger vehicle (PV) volumes in India. For reference, 5,38,172 units of mid-size SUVs were sold in India in FY24, with the wholesales rising 13.26% year-on-year (y-o-y) to 6,09,516 units in FY25.
There is intense competition in the mid-size SUV segment. Apart from the Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos, the segment boasts powerful nameplates like the Tata Sierra, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Maruti Suzuki Victoris, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Mahindra Thar Roxx, Tata Curvv, Honda Elevate, Skoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun and MG Astor.
For any new model to enter this segment and garner substantial volumes, it will be an arduous task, irrespective of whether it was a popular nameplate once.
However, the arrival of the new Duster is expected to give a much-needed boost to Renault, which has itself been struggling with low volumes. The carmaker currently offers only three models -- Kwid entry hatchback, Triber compact MPV and Kiger compact SUV.
In the absence of a large product portfolio, Renault has seen its domestic volumes take a significant hit, from 92,268 units in FY21 to merely 37,900 units in FY25, according to official data from Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). The volumes have been almost flat at 29,763 units in FY26 (April-December).
Considering all this, there is no doubt that the new Duster is a significant model for Renault. Let us discuss what the 2026 Renault Duster is going to offer.

The new Renault Duster will be based on the CMF-B platform, which supports multiple Renault and Dacia products globally. We expect the new architecture to improve structural strength, ride comfort, refinement and overall safety.
The most noticeable change is expected to be its design with an updated front, side and rear profiles. The 2026 Duster will adopt a more upright and rugged SUV stance, with a redesigned front fascia, bolder grille, LED headlamps and chunkier body cladding. The profile is expected to look more muscular, with larger alloy wheels and a more pronounced shoulder line. At the rear, revised LED taillamps and updated bumpers are likely to give the SUV a more modern and upmarket appearance.

Inside, the new Renault Duster is expected to feature a heavily updated cabin layout. Key additions are likely to include a larger touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a digital instrument cluster, automatic climate control, wireless phone charging, connected car features, rear AC vents and improved material quality. Renault is also expected to focus on better cabin space, improved ergonomics and enhanced storage solutions.
On the safety side, the 2026 Duster is expected to offer a stronger standard and optional feature list. Likely inclusions are multiple airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, rear parking camera, tyre pressure monitoring system and traction control. Higher variants could also offer advanced driver assistance features, depending on Renault's pricing and positioning strategy.
Powertrain specifications for India are expected to be confirmed at the time of the unveiling. Globally, the new Renault Duster 2026 is offered with petrol, turbo-petrol and hybrid powertrain options. For India, Renault is likely to focus on turbo-petrol engines, paired with manual and automatic gearboxes. Considering the segment it will be based in, we do not expect the new model to get an all-wheel-drive system for the Indian market.
Details on pricing, variants, full specifications and launch timelines are expected to be revealed following today's official unveiling. However, we expect the 2026 Renault Duster price to be in the range of Rs 10 lakh to Rs 19 lakh (ex-showroom). The new Renault Duster launch in India could take place by March 2026.
