The Maruti Suzuki Baleno premium hatchback was the largest-selling car in India in December 2025, while the Maruti Suzuki Dzire compact sedan emerged as the country's best-selling car in the calendar year 2025 (CY25).
The country's largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki India, sold 22,108 units of the Baleno in December 2025 as the premium hatchback beat compact SUVs like the Maruti Suzuki Fronx (around 20,700 units) and the Tata Nexon (around 19,400 units) during the month.
Surpassing Hyundai's popular mid-size SUV, the Creta (around 2,01,000 units), the Dzire took the crown as the country's top-selling car in CY25 at around 2,14,000 units. This is only the second time in 41 years that a sedan has topped the sales chart in India. The first time was in 2018, with the model being the Dzire only.
The Baleno is priced between Rs 5,98,900 and Rs 9,09,900 (ex-showroom), while the Dzire sits in the price bracket of Rs 6,25,600 to Rs 9,31,300 (ex-showroom). Following the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate rationalisation, Maruti Suzuki slashed the Baleno prices by up to Rs 86,100 and the Dzire prices by up to Rs 87,700.
Like most of the Maruti cars, Baleno and Dzire are also known for their fuel efficiency.
The Baleno employs the 1.2-litre four-cylinder K-Series Dual-Jet Dual-VVT petrol engine, which develops 89.7PS of maximum power and 113Nm of peak torque. This engine comes mated to a 5-speed or a 5-speed AMT. There is also a CNG option (77.5 PS and 98.5 Nm) with a 5-speed MT. The claimed Baleno mileage is 22.35kmpl for petrol MT, 22.94kmpl for petrol AMT and 30.61kmpkg for CNG MT.
The Dzire is powered by the 1.2-litre three-cylinder Z-Series petrol engine, which produces 81.58PS of maximum power and 111.7Nm of peak torque. Buyers can choose between a 5-speed MT and a 5-speed AMT. A CNG version is also offered. It delivers 69.75PS and 101.8Nm of torque and is available with a 5-speed MT. The Dzire mileage is claimed to be 24.79kmpl for petrol MT, 25.71kmpl for petrol AMT and 33.73kmpkg for CNG MT.
While the Baleno is equipped with features like a 9-inch touchscreen SmartPlay Pro+ infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Arkamys sound system, automatic climate control, head-up display, 360-degree view camera and six airbags, the Dzire also boasts a similar set of bells and whistles like a 9-inch SmartPlay Pro+ touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Arkamys-tuned audio, a 360-degree camera, automatic climate control, cruise control, Suzuki Connect connected car technology and six airbags. However, the compact sedan offers an electric sunroof that you do not get in the premium hatchback.
While both cars are based on Suzuki's Heartect platform, the Baleno has scored a four-star safety rating at Bharat NCAP. On the contrary, the Dzire has secured a five-star safety rating.
