Despite a 'sluggish' market, General Motors today said it was hopeful of selling about 4,000 units a month of its all new Chevrolet Sail-U-VA hatchback in the country this year. In Kerala, where the new car was launched today, it was targeting about 250 units a month, a company official said. Chevrolet Sail U-VA was an important addition to GM's small car portfolio in India, Lowell Paddock, President and Managing Director, General Motors India, told reporters here.

'The car brings a new sense of vitality to the largest, fastest growing and competitive segment in the domestic passenger car market', he said. On the sluggish Indian market, he said sales ups and downs were common. "We expect India to take its place among world's largest market," he said. Company Vice-President P Balendran said the market was sluggish due to interest rates, high inflation etc. "We are expecting market will improve in coming months."

In 2011, GM sold 1,11,510 units (all modles) nationally. 'We will not be able to meet this target as three models had been phased out. But still we will be able to maintain growth in tandem with industrial growth', he said. In Kerala, 9,500 units were sold in 2011 and this year a similar figure was being expected, he said. Two more new models would be brought out this year-- Sedan Vista and 'Enjoy' A Multi purpose vehicle, by next month.
