Sources tell CNBC-TV18 that Economic Affairs secretary, R Gopalan, may be considered for chirmanship of Trai once JS Sarma's term expires in May.
The 2G spectrum jamboree with the Supreme Court finally cancelling all 122 licenses given out during Raja’s tenure, brought to light the policies of Trai that were found to have too many loopholes. Now, sources tell CNBC-TV18 that Chairman JS Sarma’s term that was extended in the light of Supreme Court’s deadline for spectrum auction ends this May.
Sources say that several scenarios are emerging for a new Trai chairman, but Economic Affairs secretary, R Gopalan, may be considered for the post.
Speaking exclusively to CNBC-TV18, official sources told that Secretary at the Department of Telecom, R Chandrasekhar, may opt out of the search panel. He was earlier nominated to the search and selection panel.
The first meeting of Trai’s search and selection panel has concluded and there is news that the government may consider six months extension for incumbents before implementation of the license cancellation.
