Aurobindo gets US FDA nod to market diabetes control drug

Generics drugs maker Aurobindo Pharma has received final approval from US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) to manufacture and market Metformin Hydrochloride extended-release tablets in 500mg and 750mg strength.

Generics drugs maker Aurobindo Pharma has received final approval from US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) to manufacture and market Metformin Hydrochloride extended-release tablets in 500mg and 750mg strength.


Aurobindo's product is a copy of Bristol Myers Squibb's Glucophage and is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in patients with type-2 diabetes.


Metformin Hydrochloroide has annual US sales of around USD 230 million, the company said on Monday.


The product has been approved out of Unit-III formulations facility in Hyderabad, it added.


Aurobindo now has 127 final approvals and 26 tentative approvals from US FDA.


Aurobindo Pharma shares were up 0.4% at Rs 108.80 on NSE in noon trade.
