The United States Department of State has instructed non-essential employees and their families at its consulates in Karachi and Lahore to leave Pakistan, pointing to mounting security concerns triggered by regional volatility and widespread demonstrations.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Embassy of the United States, Islamabad, said the precautionary measure was taken in response to deteriorating conditions, while confirming that operations at its mission in Islamabad remain unaffected.
Visa processing in the two provincial capitals has been halted until at least March 6, and regular consular appointments have been temporarily put on hold as tensions persist.
The advisory follows days of unrest across the country after recent military action by the US and Israel against Iran, which reportedly led to the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. Anger over the strikes has fuelled protests in several urban centres, with reports indicating at least 22 fatalities in clashes and disturbances spanning Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and parts of the north.
On March 1, demonstrators in Karachi forced their way through the outer perimeter of the US consulate, parking confrontations with law enforcement personnel. Although parts of the premises, including windows and a nearby police installation, sustained damage, the main facility remained intact. Similar rallies were reported in Lahore, intensifying pressure on diplomatic sites.
Washington’s existing travel guidance already categorises Pakistan under a high-risk advisory, cautioning US citizens about terrorism threats, civil disorder and unpredictable developments. Authorities have urged nationals to steer clear of mass gatherings, stay updated through local media, and prepare contingency arrangements as the situation evolves.
Beyond Pakistan, comparable precautionary steps have been approved for certain diplomatic posts in Saudi Arabia, Oman and Cyprus amid the broader U.S.–Iran confrontation.
