US President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to impose 200 per cent tariffs on French wine and champagne after Paris indicated that it will not join the Gaza "Board of Peace".
Trump also shared a post on his social media platform Truth Social, sharing screenshots of the private messages sent by French President Emmanuel Macron over Washington's intention to take over Greenland.
"From président Macron to President Trump. My friend, We are totally in line on Syria. We can do great things on Iran. I do not understand what you are doing to Greenland," he said.
Macron added: "Let us try to build great things. I can set up a meeting after Davos in Paris on thursday afternoon. I can invite the ukrainians, the danish, the syrians and the russians in the margins. let us have a dinner together in Paris together on thursday before you go back to the us [sic] Emmanuel."
A source close to Macron said the messages shared by Trump were authentic.
Trump's replies, if any, were not part of the screenshot that he posted on his Truth Social account early on Tuesday. The White House and Macron's office did not respond to a request for comment. Macron, addressing Trump as his "friend" in the messages, said he was "totally in line" with Trump on Syria, and that they could do "great things on Iran".
Macron's message to Trump comes days after the US President announced 10% tariffs on several European countries due to their opposition to US control of Greenland. Trump announced on Truth Social that from February 1, 2026, eight European countries, including France, would face 10 percent duties on goods sent to the US.
The US president also added that the tariff would rise to 25 percent on June 1, 2026, and remain in place until Greenland is “completely and totally” sold to the United States.
Macron had called Trump's threat of tariffs over Greenland unacceptable.
Trump recently intensified his long-standing intention to acquire Greenland for US national security, citing its strategic Arctic position to counter Russia and China, and integrating it into his "Golden Dome" missile defence plans.
The US President has declared that America will pursue control of the territory whether the European allies "like it or not", framing it as essential to prevent adversarial powers from dominating the region. This has raised tensions between US and its European allies.
