The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Friday acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message of condolence, thanking him for his remarks on the legacy of former Bangladesh prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia.

In a post on social media platform X, the BNP wrote, “We sincerely appreciate your message of condolence and remembrance, Honourable @narendramodi. Begum Khaleda Zia’s contributions to Bangladesh–India relations will be remembered.”

The response followed Prime Minister Modi’s message earlier this week after the death of Begum Khaleda Zia, in which he expressed grief and recalled his interactions with the former Bangladeshi leader.

Posting on X, Modi said, “Deeply saddened to learn about the passing away of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in Dhaka. Our sincerest condolences to her family and all the people of Bangladesh. May the Almighty grant her family the fortitude to bear this tragic loss.”

He also highlighted her role in strengthening bilateral ties, stating, “As the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh, her important contributions towards the development of Bangladesh, as well as India-Bangladesh relations, will always be remembered.”

Recalling a past meeting, Modi added, “I recall my warm meeting with her in Dhaka in 2015. We hope that her vision and legacy will continue to guide our partnership. May her soul rest in peace.”

Begum Khaleda Zia, Bangladesh’s first woman prime minister and chairperson of the BNP, passed away at the age of 80 on December 30, 2025 morning while undergoing treatment at Dhaka’s Apollo Hospital, the party said.

In a brief statement, the BNP confirmed that the veteran leader died after battling multiple health complications.
