Nostradamus’ 2026 prophecies spark global debate: War, death and catastrophe fears explained

The name Nostradamus continues to evoke intrigue centuries after his death, with renewed interest now focused on a set of grim predictions linked by followers to the year 2026. As the year begins, four cryptic prophecies attributed to the 16th-century French astrologer have drawn widespread attention, sparking debate among believers and sceptics alike.

Written in symbolic quatrains, Nostradamus’s verses have long been interpreted in connection with major global events, despite the absence of specific dates in his original texts. His 1555 book Les Prophéties contains 942 quatrains that continue to be revisited during periods of global uncertainty.

‘Seven months' great war’: Fears of prolonged conflict

One of the most discussed verses reads, “Seven months great war, people dead through evil / Rouen, Evreux the King will not fail."

Followers claim the passage points to a prolonged and deadly conflict, with some linking it to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war or a broader European escalation. The reference to French cities has also fuelled speculation about the geographic spread of conflict.

Supporters often cite Nostradamus’ earlier line, “Within two cities, there will be scourges the like of which was never seen,” which has historically been associated by believers with the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, though historians dispute such interpretations.

‘The great swarm of bees’: A cryptic warning

Another prophecy that has puzzled interpreters states, “The great swarm of bees will arise by the night ambush.”

The imagery has led to varied interpretations, ranging from covert military operations and drone warfare to political symbolism involving powerful leaders or regimes. The lack of clear context has made this one of Nostradamus’ most debated and enigmatic predictions, with no consensus on its meaning.

‘The great man will be struck down’: Death of a powerful figure?

Perhaps the most striking line comes from the 26th verse of Century I, “The great man will be struck down in the day by a thunderbolt."

The phrase “great man” has been broadly interpreted to refer to a global leader, royal figure, or influential personality. The dramatic imagery of a daylight lightning strike has intensified speculation, with some viewing it as a metaphor for a sudden political downfall or shocking public death.

‘Ticino will overflow with blood’: Switzerland in focus

Another prophecy has drawn attention for its geographic specificity, “Because of the favour that the city will show… the Ticino will overflow with blood…"

The verse references Ticino, Switzerland’s Italian-speaking canton, suggesting the possibility of violence, disaster, or mass casualties. While critics point out that Nostradamus’ Middle French wording and manuscript variations make firm conclusions impossible, the prophecy has fueled conspiracy theories about unrest in Europe.

Recent incidents in Switzerland have further amplified online speculation, though authorities have not linked any real-world events to the prophecy.

Why 2026?

Nostradamus never assigned dates to his predictions, but conspiracy theorists claim the 26th quatrains symbolically correspond to the year 2026. Similar claims were made for previous years, including 2025, which followers said would see the end of the Russia-Ukraine war, natural disasters, and a resurgence of ancient diseases.

Born Michel de Nostredame, Nostradamus was a physician and astrologer whose work was shaped by his era, religious texts, and personal tragedies, including the loss of his family to illness. Scholars argue his writings reflect symbolic fears rather than literal foresight.

Skepticism and enduring fascination

Historians and linguists continue to caution against literal interpretations of Nostradamus’ work, noting that his verses are deliberately vague and highly adaptable to modern events. Despite this, his prophecies resurface regularly during times of geopolitical tension.

As 2026 unfolds, Nostradamus’ quatrains once again occupy public imagination, reflecting humanity’s enduring tendency to search the past for clues about an uncertain future.
