“My kids thought I’d die”: Cabot breaks silence on Coldplay kiss-cam backlash and harassment

Kristin Cabot says a viral Coldplay kiss-cam clip triggered death threats, doxxing and relentless harassment, leaving her children fearing for their lives and in therapy, as the former Astronomer HR chief describes the hidden personal cost of online pile-ons.

Kristin Cabot, the former head of human resources at US tech company Astronomer, has given her first extensive account of how a brief kiss-cam moment at a Coldplay concert in July spiralled into months of internet outrage, harassment and personal hardship that deeply affected her and her children.

The controversy began at a Coldplay concert in Gillette Stadium, Massachusetts, during the band’s “Jumbotron Song,” when the stadium screen briefly showed Cabot, 53, wrapped in the arms of then-Astronomer CEO Andy Byron. Both were in the midst of marital separations at the time. The moment, captured in a 16-second clip, went viral almost instantly, racking up tens of millions of views online. Frontman Chris Martin joked on stage that they were either “having an affair” or just shy, a remark that propelled the clip into a broader social media frenzy.

Within days, the public reaction grew into sustained harassment. Cabot and Byron were placed on leave by Astronomer’s board, and both eventually resigned from their positions. Bryon stepped down in July; Cabot officially left her role later that month. Astronomer even enlisted celebrity Gwyneth Paltrow in a tongue-in-cheek promotional video that Cabot later criticised, describing it as insensitive given the personal turmoil she endured.

In interviews with The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly and other outlets over the past week, Cabot has detailed the toll the episode took on her family. She said she began receiving dozens of death threats, was doxxed, and fielded hundreds of harassing calls daily at the worst of it. Her children, a teenage son and a 14-year-old daughter, were frightened by the public scrutiny and threats, fearful not just for her safety, but for their own. At one point, her daughter was moved to tears after being recognised at a public pool, and both children began therapy to cope with the trauma before gradually returning to school.

Cabot acknowledged in her interviews that alcohol played a role in her decision to embrace Byron that night and called it a “bad decision,” but she emphasised that the response was disproportionate. She has sought to use her experience as a cautionary tale about the destructive effects of online mob culture and the importance of empathy, especially toward individuals thrust unexpectedly into the global spotlight.

Her message to others grappling with public shaming is clear: mistakes should not be met with threats or violence, and society must temper curiosity and humour with humanity.
