Swarnjit Singh, the first Sikh mayor of Norwich, Connecticut, has hoisted a Sikh flag in his office and reportedly planned 53 “cultural days” in 2026, including celebrations for Sikh gurus.

He also has a "1984 Sikh genocide memorial" in the office, according to a post on X.

In a post on X, a user wrote, "Swarnjit Singh, the new Sikh mayor of Norwich, Connecticut, flies the Sikh flag in his office and plans 53 “cultural days” in 2026, including celebrations for Sikh gurus. He also has a "1984 Sikh genocide memorial" in the office of a town that has absolutely nothing to do with it. Comments one local: "This is exactly the type of person that should have never been granted citizenship. He has not assimilated nor does he appear to want to assimilate. He should be denaturalized and deported."

"But how did Norwich, a city with just 10 Sikh families and a 60% white majority, elect a person who can barely speak English and wants to prioritize foreign religious holidays over American traditions? The CIA has been weaponising Sikh separatists against India since the 1970s and Swarnjit Singh's election could be part of that gameplan," he added.

Punjab-origin Democrat businessman Swarnjit Singh was elected in November. Swarnjit, who, according to reports, traces his roots in Jalandhar, got 3,978 votes (57.25%) while his Republican rival Stacy Gould received 2,828 votes (40.7%).

According to his profile on his election website, “

fter his family fled the 1984 Sikh Genocide, Singh arrived in the United States in 2007 seeking the promise of the American Dream and freedom from the threat of violent persecution.”

In an interview with the Daily Campus, Singh had earlier said, “I know many people in the U.S. don’t know much about the Sikh faith, and there are some misconceptions, but this is an opportunity for people including those who have elected me to look into it. Sikhism is a very peaceful faith. We believe in one God, and there are three basic principles: work hard for your living, meditate, and share with others.”
