US Attorney General Pam Bondi’s appearance before the House Judiciary Committee quickly turned into one of the most tense Cabinet hearings of President Donald Trump’s second term. Lawmakers pressed her on the Justice Department’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files, reported failed indictments of Democratic lawmakers and the fatal shootings of two protesters in Minneapolis. Bondi responded with a strategy that was forceful and often combative, CNN reported.

1. A hard line on Epstein

One of the most emotional moments came when Rep. Pramila Jayapal asked Epstein survivors in the room to stand and then urged Bondi to apologize not just for the abuse they endured but also for the department’s redaction failures that exposed sensitive information.

Bondi declined to apologize for the redactions. Instead, she pivoted to criticism of former Attorney General Merrick Garland. The exchange set the tone. Throughout the hearing, Bondi resisted direct answers on Epstein-related questions and sparred openly with Democrats and even some Republicans.

She rejected calls to address survivors seated behind her and at times talked over members, prompting Chairman Jim Jordan to remind her the time belonged to lawmakers. A recent poll shows broad public dissatisfaction with how the Epstein files have been handled, making her confrontational posture a political gamble.

2. A pointed clash with Thomas Massie

Republican Rep. Thomas Massie, who has pushed for greater transparency on the Epstein files, managed to pin Bondi down more directly. He questioned why certain names, including businessman Les Wexner, were redacted in contexts tied to potential criminal suspicion.

Bondi said the name was restored within 40 minutes. Massie responded that it was corrected only after he and others flagged it. The exchange cut through the broader shouting matches and underscored Republican unease with the department’s handling of the issue.

3. A rare moment of unity

Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell shifted the focus to threats against lawmakers and their families. He asked whether the Justice Department was investigating threats against him. Bondi responded that such threats were being reviewed and that no member of Congress or their family should face violence.

For a brief moment, the tone softened and the partisan edge eased, highlighting a shared concern about political threats.

4. Broader administration pressures

The hearing also reflected the administration’s wider challenges. Questions surfaced about the Justice Department’s reported attempts to indict Democratic lawmakers and about the fallout from the Minneapolis shootings.

Republicans tried to steer discussion toward crime rates and immigration enforcement, but recent polling suggests public frustration on those fronts as well.

5. Counterattacks that missed

Bondi sought to turn the tables at several points, citing stock market gains under Trump and accusing a Democratic lawmaker of voting against an antisemitism measure. That lawmaker, Rep. Becca Balint, later noted her family’s Holocaust history and left the hearing visibly upset.

Bondi’s approach appeared designed to withstand political pressure rather than defuse it. Whether that strategy helps the administration with a broader audience remains to be seen.
