Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari revealed that the country’s military had advised him to take shelter in a bunker during the military confrontation with India in May, which followed India’s launch of Operation Sindoor.

Addressing a public gathering, Zardari said he had rejected the advice, stating that if martyrdom were destined, it would happen regardless, adding that leaders do not die in bunkers. He claimed the Pakistan armed forces had delivered what he described as a befitting response during the confrontation.

Reacting to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s warning to Pakistan issued after hostilities subsided, “Sukh chain ki zindagi jiyo, roti khao, warna meri goli toh hai hi.”

“Hum jung ke maidan ke liye khud tayar hai, hum apne jano ki kurbani dene ke liye tayar hai. Toh yeh bhul jao roti hogi, goli hogi, tum Kya goli maroge goli toh hum marenge,” he said.

India had launched Operation Sindoor on the intervening night of May 6 and 7, carrying out precision strikes on nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Tensions escalated after Pakistan attempted to target civilian and military installations in India, following which Indian forces carried out retaliatory strikes on Pakistani air bases.

The video of President Zardari’s remarks was shared on social media by Baloch leader Mir Yar Baloch.

Speaking at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh on the 18th death anniversary of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, Zardari said Pakistan did not seek war but would respond decisively to any aggression. He was joined at the event by senior Pakistan Peoples Party leaders, including PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, and the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Faisal Mumtaz Rathore.

Without naming former prime minister Imran Khan, Zardari criticised a previous administration, saying “one foolish man” had damaged Pakistan’s global standing and weakened the economy. He said the current leadership was working to restore international ties and stabilise the economy.

Referring to the May conflict, Zardari said the episode underscored that war was not a game and claimed Pakistan had exercised restraint. He asserted that Pakistan could have escalated further but chose not to do so, while arguing that size alone did not determine resolve in a conflict.

He praised Pakistan’s military leadership, lauding the army and air force commanders for what he described as firm handling of the situation. Zardari also commended Field Marshal Asim Munir, saying he was working closely with civilian leadership to move the country forward, and claimed that US President Donald Trump had spoken positively about him.

On May 10, India and Pakistan agreed to halt military action on land, air and sea after talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMO) of both countries. The ceasefire followed Indian precision strikes that caused significant damage to Pakistani air bases, including Nur Khan and Rahim Yar Khan, during the confrontation.
