‘Giving taxes to India’: Pakistan internet melts down after Nawaz Sharif’s grandson’s bride picks Sabyasachi and Tarun Tahiliani

Whether it was “giving taxes to India” or “drooling over clothes from across the border,” the internet in Pakistan ensured this wedding was discussed for everything except the vows.

Pakistani social media erupted over Muhammad Junaid Safdar and Shanzeh Ali Rohail’s wedding, criticizing the bride’s choice of Indian designers and sparking a cross-border fashion debate, overshadowing the event’s celebrations and political guest list.

The internet in Pakistan had a field day over the wedding of Muhammad Junaid Safdar and Shanzeh Ali Rohail in Lahore, though not for the reasons one might expect. What was meant to be a joyous family celebration quickly turned into an online fashion roast.

At the centre of the chaos was the bride’s choice of wardrobe. For her mehendi ceremony, Shanzeh Ali stunned in a lehenga by Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, and for the main ceremony she picked a heavy red saree by Tarun Tahiliani.

Pakistani social media users wasted no time trolling the bride. One Instagram comment read “Very mid. I’m sure Pakistani designers could have made her something more Pakistani.”

Another chimed in with “Shame on giving taxes to India,” while a third sarcastically asked, “What’s this obsession with Indian designers? They drool over our Pakistani clothes and look at this!” Yet another jab noted “Always picking ordinary Indian designs over our own absolutely amazing designers.”

Some critics didn’t stop at the bride’s outfits and even took aim at the wedding’s VIP guest list. Maryam Nawaz, mother of the groom and a senior politician, was mocked for her own wedding attire on social media, with some users calling her “self-obsessed” and accusing her of trying to outshine the bride.

The reaction highlights just how serious business fashion has become on Pakistani social media. A wedding that brought together political elites turned into a cross-border style debate over Indian designers at a time when ties between Pakistan and India are anything but friendly.

Whether it was “giving taxes to India” or “drooling over clothes from across the border,” the internet in Pakistan ensured this wedding was discussed for everything except the vows.
