French President Emmanuel Macron found himself trending for reasons that had little to do with policy after he appeared at the World Economic Forum in Davos wearing reflective blue aviator sunglasses. The unusual look quickly became fodder for speculation online, with some users dragging his personal life into the spotlight.
A look that stole the spotlight
Macron was addressing global leaders at Davos when attention shifted from his remarks to his eyewear. The mirrored sunglasses stood out in a formal indoor setting and sparked a wave of online chatter. As images spread across social media, users began guessing why the French president was wearing them, with some suggesting a fashion statement and others going much further.
The health explanation
The Elysee Palace had already addressed Macron’s appearance days earlier. The president had been seen wearing the same sunglasses during an outdoor military inspection, where his right eye appeared swollen and red. Macron later explained that he was dealing with a minor eye injury caused by a burst blood vessel, which he described as a “completely harmless” condition.
Macron even joked about it, calling it “l’oeil du tigre” or the “eye of the tiger,” a nod to the song by Survivor featured in the 1982 film Rocky III. “For those who get the reference, it’s a sign of determination,” he said.
French media reported that such burst blood vessels do not affect vision and often occur due to coughing, sneezing or rubbing the eye.
Medical doctor and media commentator Jimmy Mohamed told RTL that Macron “opted for this style for aesthetic reasons, because he’s a public figure.”
“Some people might think he’s ill, so to avoid being photographed in that state, he decided to wear sunglasses,” Mohamed added. “The glasses protect his image, but not really his eye.”
Marriage speculation takes over social media
Despite the explanation, social media speculation took a darker turn. Some users linked the sunglasses to rumours about Macron’s marriage to Brigitte Macron, with posts joking or alleging domestic issues.
One user wrote, “Look at that clown Emmanuel Macron responding to President Trump wearing gas station sunglasses.”
Another post read, “OMG. Emmanuel Macron is now telling people that he has a burst eye vessel and must therefore wear these sunglasses inside. Public speculation is that Brigitte whooped his ass again. What do you guys think?”
The speculation revived memories of a viral video from last year that showed Brigitte Macron appearing to push her husband as he stood at an aircraft doorway. The footage, captured by an Associated Press camera operator, led to widespread online abuse directed at the French first lady. Macron later clarified that the moment was playful and not an act of violence.
Politics in the background
The moment unfolded against the backdrop of renewed tensions with Donald Trump. At Davos, Macron strongly criticised threats to annex Greenland and warned that Europe would not give in to pressure or intimidation. He said the continent would continue to defend territorial sovereignty and the rule of law.
Yet, for many online, Macron’s sunglasses overshadowed his message. What began as a minor health precaution quickly spiralled into a social media spectacle, once again showing how a leader’s personal image can eclipse geopolitics in the digital age.
