Bermuda Triangle mystery may have a scientific explanation, researchers say

Scientists say methane bursts from the ocean floor could explain long-standing disappearances once blamed on mystery and myth.

For decades, the mystery around the Bermuda Triangle has inspired books, documentaries and conspiracy theories about vanished ships and aircraft. Now, scientists say the explanation may be far less mysterious and far more geological.

The Bermuda Triangle loosely refers to a stretch of the western North Atlantic Ocean bounded by Miami, Bermuda and Puerto Rico. Over the years, the Bermuda Triangle has gained public attention after vessels and planes crossing the area have “disappeared without a trace” in this region. Conspiracy theories have led to claims involving everything from alien activity to time warps. However, researchers argue that natural processes beneath the ocean floor could help explain at least some of the incidents.

One leading theory focuses on methane gas trapped in sediments on the seabed. Scientists have long known that methane hydrates exist in large quantities under certain ocean floors. Under specific conditions, such as shifts in temperature or pressure, methane can be released suddenly in large bursts. When this happens underwater, it can significantly reduce the density of the water above it.

If enough methane rises rapidly to the surface, the surrounding water can become frothy and less buoyant. In theory, a ship passing directly over such a release could lose buoyancy and sink quickly. As far as aircraft are concerned, those flying low over to the ocean could potentially see their engine performance get affected when methane enters the atmosphere, though evidence for this remains limited.

Researchers caution that while the methane hypothesis makes sense scientifically, “concrete proof” linking specific Bermuda Triangle vanishings to gas eruptions is rare. Many of the region’s most famous cases occurred years ago, when record keeping and navigation technology were far less developed. Weather patterns in the Atlantic, including sudden storms and powerful currents like the Gulf Stream, have also been shown to contribute to maritime accidents.

Maritime and aviation authorities generally maintain that the Bermuda Triangle is not uniquely dangerous compared to other heavily travelled parts of the world’s oceans. Modern satellite tracking, improved forecasting and more reliable navigation systems have significantly reduced unexplained losses in the region.

Scientists say the key point is that natural explanations do not make the ocean any less powerful. Geological activity, shifting seabeds and volatile weather can combine in complex ways. But they stress that there is no credible scientific evidence supporting supernatural claims.

After centuries of fascination, the Bermuda Triangle may still capture imaginations. Yet researchers suggest that its secrets, if any remain, are likely to be found in geology and physics rather than myth.
