US President Donald Trump on Tuesday stepped up the anticipation around Washington’s next move on Iran after earlier highlighting on social media that “help was on the way” for protestors.
When asked what he meant by the social media post, Trump said, "You're going to find out soon.” He further added, “It’s a good idea for Americans to leave Iran.”
The remarks came as protests in Iran entered a third week, with demonstrators rallying against economic hardship, political repression and soaring prices. Authorities have responded with a wide-ranging crackdown, including mass arrests and communications blackouts.
Earlier, Trump told Iranians to keep protesting and said help was on the way, but did not elaborate on whether that meant possible US action.
"Iranian Patriots, KEEP PROTESTING - TAKE OVER YOUR INSTITUTIONS!!!... HELP IS ON ITS WAY," Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
He said he had cancelled all meetings with Iranian officials until the "senseless killing" of protesters stopped.
Trump has previously said military action is among options he is weighing to punish Iran, which is seeing its biggest anti-government protests in years. About 2,000 people including security personnel have been killed in protests in Iran, Reuters quoted an Iranian official on Tuesday.
Late on Monday, Trump also announced 25 per cent import tariffs on products from any country doing business with Iran - a major oil exporter.
“Effective immediately, any country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a tariff of 25% on any and all business being done with the United States of America,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
"This order is final and conclusive," he added.
Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araqchi told Al Jazeera on Monday that he had continued to communicate with US special envoy Steve Witkoff during the protests and Tehran was studying ideas proposed by Washington.
