In the heart of South Goa lies a world far removed from the beach shacks and crowded coastline. Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary, spread across more than 200 square kilometres, is one of the largest protected green belts in the state. Nestled in the Western Ghats, this sanctuary is a treasure trove of biodiversity, lush forests, and serene waterfalls, making it a perfect escape for those seeking nature beyond the sea.
The sanctuary is a patchwork of moist deciduous, evergreen, and semi-evergreen forests, interlaced with streams and ancient Myristica swamp forests that are among the rarest ecosystems in India. This natural diversity creates a thriving habitat for countless species, many of which are endemic to the Western Ghats.
Wildlife enthusiasts are in for a treat here. The sanctuary shelters the gaur (Indian bison), Malabar giant squirrel, four-horned antelope, sloth bear, and even the elusive leopard. Bird lovers can spot the great pied hornbill, Nilgiri wood pigeon, and white-bellied blue flycatcher. For butterfly watchers, species like the Malabar banded swallowtail and southern birdwing add vibrant colour to the dense green landscape.
Adding to its charm are the sanctuary’s two perennial waterfalls—Savri and Mainapi. Savri is easier to reach, with steps guiding visitors to its gushing cascades, while Mainapi involves a slightly longer trek through the forest. Both falls are at their most spectacular during the monsoon, when the landscape turns into a refreshing green paradise.
Visitors can explore the sanctuary through guided treks and trails, which are especially popular in winter for bird watching. Entry fees are modest, and the sanctuary is open during the day, typically from morning until late afternoon. While basic facilities like restrooms and an information office are available, it’s best to carry food and water, as there are no eateries inside.
Reaching Netravali is easiest via private transport. It lies about 45 kilometres from Margao and around 70 kilometres from Goa’s airport. The drive itself is scenic, passing through fields, small villages, and the foothills of the Western Ghats, giving travellers a glimpse of Goa’s countryside beauty.
For those who associate Goa only with its golden beaches, Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary is a refreshing revelation. It is a place where the state’s quieter, greener, and wilder side comes alive—making it a must-visit for nature lovers and explorers alike.
