Madhya Pradesh, commonly referred to as the "heart of India," is scattered with ancient forts that speak of dynasties, battles, and architectural genius. Though Gwalior Fort and Mandu are famous, several less-visited forts are hidden treasures. Here are ten old fortresses in Madhya Pradesh you might not have heard of.

1. Ater Fort
Situated in the Bhind district, Ater Fort was constructed in the 17th century by the Bhadoria dynasty. Its red sandstone structure testifies to Mughal influence through imposing gates, bastions, and secret chambers that are now partially in ruins.

2. Narwar Fort
Sitting atop a hill in Shivpuri, Narwar Fort boasts Rajput, Mughal, and Maratha heritages intertwined in its history. Covering an area of 8 square kilometres, it boasts palaces, temples, and water tanks overlooking the Sindh River.

3. Datia Fort (Bir Singh Palace)
Constructed by Raja Bir Singh Deo in 1614, Datia Fort is a seven-story architectural wonder without a foundation. It has Mughal as well as Rajput architecture, and once, left Mughal emperor Jahangir was amazed.

4. Asirgarh Fort
Referred to as the "Key to the Deccan," Burhanpur's Asirgarh Fort dominated the road to southern India. With its Afghan, Mughal, and Maratha past, it contains mosques, temples, and military buildings.

5. Garhkundar Fort
The lesser-known fort in the Tikamgarh district is linked with the Chandela monarchs. Its marriage of defence architecture and temples gives one a glimpse of Bundelkhand's medieval history, free from the tourists' inflow.

6. Chanderi Fort
Overlooking the ancient town of Chanderi, this fort protected key trade routes. With huge gates and battlements, it was a witness to battles between Rajputs, Mughals, and Bundelas. Nowadays, it's an observation post for panoramic views.

7. Raisen Fort
Located close to Bhopal, Raisen Fort had 84 ponds within its walls, many of which are still present. It was a site of intense battles between Afghan rulers, Rajputs, and Mughals, and features temples, mosques, and palaces.

8. Dhar Fort
Dhar Fort is a testament to Paramara dynasty rule, followed by Muslim rulers. Its giant sandstone walls, Mughal palace, and Indo-Islamic buildings are testaments to medieval architectural and strategic significance.

9. Orchha Fort
While Orchha is becoming popular, its complex of forts continues to surprise tourists. Constructed by Bundela rulers, it contains Jehangir Mahal and Raj Mahal and features elaborate frescoes, courtyards, and lovely views of the river.

10. Mandla Fort
Nestled on the banks of the Narmada, Mandla Fort was constructed by the Gond dynasts. Circular walls, gateways, and surrounding temples turn it into a heritage site that betrays tribal as well as Rajput influences.
