Wipro asks staff to stay 6 hours in office on work-from-office days or leave days may reduce

Wipro has updated its hybrid work rules from 2026. Employees must stay 6 hours in the office on required days. Missing office hours may reduce leave balance, as remote-only days are now limited.

  • Wipro now requires 6 hours in office on hybrid workdays from Jan 1, 2026
  • Employees must attend office 3 days a week, with 6 hours minimum per day
  • Remote work days for special reasons reduced from 30 to 12 per year

Wipro has updated its hybrid work rules starting January 1, 2026. The company now says employees must stay at least 6 hours in the office on the days they are asked to come to work in person, as per a report by The Economic Times. Wipro still wants employees to come to the office 3 days every week, like before. The new rule only adds a minimum time they must stay in the office on those 3 days.

Earlier, Wipro allowed hybrid work, but it did not clearly say how many hours employees had to stay in the office. Now, the company has made it clear. The 6 hours must be between the time employees mark their attendance on the app and the time they leave the office.

Wipro’s normal workday is still 9.5 hours per day, and employees can complete the remaining hours from home or anywhere else, as long as their work is done. The 6-hour rule is only for the office stay on the required days, not the full workday.

The company informed staff about this through internal emails. Wipro says it still supports hybrid work, but wants everyone to follow the same rules so teams can work better together.

The new policy also affects leave days. If an employee does not stay 6 hours in the office on a required day, the company may cut half a leave day from their leave balance. If someone keeps missing the office days or does not complete the required hours again and again, their total leave days could reduce further.

In 2024, Wipro had introduced a policy that allowed employees to work remotely for extra days if they were sick or had family care needs. At that time, employees could use up to 30 remote work days in a year for special reasons. But with the 2026 update, this number has been reduced to 12 days per year.

Wipro’s decision is part of a larger shift seen across Indian IT companies, where hybrid work is still allowed, but the rules are becoming stricter so employees complete their office time and work hours properly.

The company has said that this update is not about removing flexibility completely, but about making sure employees complete the time they are supposed to, so the company and the teams can plan work better.

The policy update has received mixed reactions internally, but Wipro says it will continue to check how the policy works and make changes if needed.
