Popular music streaming platform, Spotify, which is known for its huge collection of audio library, seems to be venturing into new territory. In a recent pilot program running in its native country Sweden, Spotify appears to be testing an emergency alert feature, which is still in the very early stages.

According to a report by TechCrunch, a new code was discovered in the latest beta build of the Spotify app, which reveals a warning system, that will distribute public announcements related to various important phenomena. Through this feature, we can expect Spotify to notify its users if there is an accident, a very serious event, or make a public announcement.

This feature was first spotted by technologist and reverse engineer, Chris Messina and suggests that these emergency alerts will be pushed to Spotify users as app notifications. However, its release timeline is still not disclosed by the music platform.

Spotify also shared a statement with TechCrunch and mentioned that the feature was only being tested in Sweden currently. A Spotify spokesperson informed, “At Spotify, we routinely conduct a number of tests in an effort to improve our user experience. Some of those tests end up paving the way for our broader user experience while most serve only as an important learning.”

Previously, Google and Meta had also integrated emergency alerts into their interface that warns users of upcoming natural calamities through a red warning sign. These warning alerts are now available all across the world, especially on Android smartphones.
