Renault has revealed the new-generation Duster for India with a renewed focus on digital technology and connected features. At the centre of this update is the OpenR Link multimedia system, which transforms the Duster’s cabin into a software-driven digital space. The SUV now features a dual-display cockpit paired with Google built-in services, positioning the new Duster as a connected vehicle designed around everyday Indian driving conditions.

Unlike conventional infotainment systems that function mainly as an extension of a smartphone, OpenR Link is built on Android Automotive OS and runs directly on the vehicle. This allows navigation, apps, voice services and vehicle-related functions to work independently, while still retaining compatibility with smartphone-based platforms for users who prefer them.

Dual-display OpenR digital cockpit

The new Renault Duster adopts Renault’s OpenR digital cockpit layout, combining a large central touchscreen with a fully digital driver instrument cluster. The central infotainment display measures up to 10.1 inches and is positioned for easy access, while the driver display presents driving data, alerts and navigation information.

This dual-display setup allows key information to remain in the driver’s line of sight, reducing distraction. The interface is designed with a touch-first approach and follows familiar Android-style layouts, helping drivers adapt quickly. Animations, menus and transitions are handled by the vehicle’s own hardware, which results in smoother operation compared to older infotainment systems.

Android Automotive OS foundation

OpenR Link is based on Android Automotive OS, which differs from Android Auto. Android Automotive runs natively on the car and does not require a connected smartphone to function. This enables deeper integration of vehicle systems such as climate controls, driving modes and system settings directly into the operating system.

Because the platform is software-led, Renault can deliver over-the-air updates to compatible vehicles in India. These updates can improve system stability, introduce new features and keep apps up to date over the ownership period, without requiring a visit to the service centre.

Google Maps built-in for Indian driving

Google Maps built-in is one of the most significant features of OpenR Link for Indian users. Navigation runs directly on the infotainment system and is optimised for the larger screen. Drivers get access to live traffic information, route recalculation, lane guidance and continuously updated maps, which are especially relevant in congested urban areas.

By signing in with a Google account, users can sync saved locations such as home and work, along with recent searches. Routes planned on a smartphone can be sent directly to the vehicle before a journey. Turn-by-turn navigation can also be displayed on the digital driver cluster, reducing the need to glance at the centre screen frequently.

Google Assistant voice integration

The system includes Google Assistant built directly into the vehicle, enabling hands-free voice control. Drivers can use natural voice commands to search for destinations, check traffic conditions, control media playback, make calls or send messages.

Depending on the variant, Google Assistant can also interact with select vehicle functions such as adjusting the cabin temperature or checking vehicle information. This voice-first approach is designed to minimise physical interaction with the touchscreen, particularly during city driving.

Google Play Store and native apps

OpenR Link provides access to the Google Play Store directly from the infotainment system. Users can download compatible in-car apps without connecting a smartphone. These apps are specifically optimised for automotive use and include navigation alternatives like Waze, music streaming services such as Amazon Music, radio and podcast apps, parking and mobility services, and web browsers that can be used while parked.

Apps run natively on the system, allowing them to launch quickly and function independently. Internet access can be provided through a connected smartphone hotspot or an in-car data solution, depending on the variant and market configuration.

Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support

Despite its strong native capabilities, Renault has retained support for smartphone integration. The new Duster with OpenR Link supports wireless Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay, allowing users to mirror their phone interface without plugging in a cable.

This ensures compatibility with apps and services that users may already rely on, while giving them the flexibility to switch between native Google apps and phone-based ecosystems directly from the infotainment interface.

Connected services and vehicle recovery

OpenR Link works in tandem with the My Renault smartphone app to enable connected car features in India. Owners can remotely check vehicle status, view service reminders, track mileage and access warranty information.

A key security-related feature offered on supported variants is stolen vehicle tracking. In the event of theft, owners can locate the vehicle through the My Renault app and share location data with authorities to assist in recovery. Because the system is integrated at the vehicle level, it does not rely on aftermarket tracking devices.

Personalisation and user profiles

The system supports user profiles, allowing multiple drivers to save their preferred navigation destinations, media settings and display layouts. Vehicle settings, driving modes and system preferences can also be adjusted through the OpenR Link interface, making it a central control hub for the car.

What's in it for users

With the new-generation Duster, Renault is positioning OpenR Link as a core part of the SUV’s value proposition in India. The combination of a dual-display digital cockpit, Google Maps built-in, Google Assistant, Play Store apps, connected services, stolen vehicle tracking, and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay reflects Renault’s shift toward a software-driven, connected ownership experience. For Indian buyers, the new Duster brings a level of in-car technology that aligns closely with everyday digital habits.
