Perplexity has announced a major update to its Comet Assistant, an AI-powered helper that debuted in July. The latest version introduces advanced multitasking capabilities, improved web interaction, and enhanced user control, enabling users to complete more complex, long-duration tasks with greater ease.

Smarter multitasking across tabs

One of the most significant changes in the new Comet Assistant is its ability to work seamlessly across multiple browser tabs. The AI can now perceive and interact with complex websites while drawing context from different sources simultaneously. This allows users to handle tasks such as data entry, research, or travel planning without switching tabs repeatedly.

For instance, when working on a spreadsheet that requires information from another website, the Comet Assistant can now access both tabs at once—automating a process that previously demanded constant manual switching.

Enhanced performance and longer task handling

According to Perplexity, internal tests show that the upgraded Comet Assistant performs 23% better than its predecessor. This improvement comes from its new capacity to sustain focus over longer periods and complete multi-step operations more reliably. Users can now delegate complex, multi-layered tasks such as organizing a job search or comparing travel options without worrying about interruptions or incomplete results.

Perplexity suggests several examples of what the new assistant can handle: finding job openings on LinkedIn, searching for the cheapest flights between cities, or creating Google Sheets to track personal data such as a child’s school attendance.

Improved user control and transparency

With the update, user control remains central to the Comet experience. Whenever the assistant needs to interact with the browser for a specific task, it now explicitly asks for permission. Users can decide whether they want the assistant to execute actions within their browser, and Comet will respect that preference throughout the task. This ensures that every interaction remains transparent and privacy-focused.

Perplexity says the redesigned Comet Assistant aligns with its vision of making the internet more useful, inspiring, and personalized. By introducing a smarter, multitasking AI that adapts to user preferences and workflows, the company hopes to restore efficiency and enjoyment to everyday web use.

The update is now rolling out to all Comet users globally.
