ChatGPT now has a desktop app which is currently only available on macOS for now. OpenAI CTO Mira Murati showcased the app during an event on May 13, where she also said that ChatGPT is getting a new and refreshed UI.
During the demonstration showcased by OpenAI yesterday, users were given a glimpse of the new ChatGPT desktop app, which is specially designed to operate seamlessly alongside other programs in a compact window. It can decipher queries related to the user's screen content, through text or voice commands.
What can the desktop app do?The biggest highlight of the app is that it offers insightful responses based on visual analysis. In the demo shown by OpenAI, users asked ChatGPT questions about what’s on their screen — whether by typing or verbally. ChatGPT could then respond based on what it sees through the device’s cameras.
OpenAI has also provided the ability to question by using the Option + Space keyboard shortcut on any macOS-based device. You can also take and discuss screenshots within the app to ask questions The app has a new Voice Mode that allows voice conversations with ChatGPT directly from your PCs.
This mode can be activated by clicking the headphone icon on the bottom right corner of the app. Open AI also introduced its newest flagship-grade AI model called GPT-4o and a new UI for ChatGPT’s web version at the same event.
When will the app be available? The app will be rolling out to ChatGPT Plus subscribers from today, ahead of a wider launch in the coming weeks. However, we did check on the macOS App Store and the app wasn’t yet listed. The ChatGPT desktop app is slated to come to Windows PCs later this year.
