Microsoft is rolling out a new offline mode for the OneDrive web version, especially for students and professional users. This much-awaited feature on OneDrive has also seen the cloud storage service updated with an improved UI, folder colours, and more. It aligns with other cloud-based services that have offered offline options for years, like Google Drive and iCloud.
Microsoft One Drive gets offline access: Key details
Microsoft via its official blog post, listed the advantages of the new offline mode. This feature will let OneDrive’s web users marked as offline navigate to their favourite files and the home section without any internet connection. Users can also rename, arrange, and copy files, and will all be synced up once they are back online.
You can also free up local storage space by modifying or moving the OneDrive files to a PC. Both actions were previously available through File Explorer on Windows PC, but you can now carry these out directly from the OneDrive web version. Microsoft has also promised a 3x performance improvement while utilising OneDrive, thanks to the OneDrive Sync app.
However, there are some limitations as well. For starters, the offline mode in OneDrive for the web only works if you have less than 250,000 files in your account. Using a work or school account in any Chromium-base browser on a Windows PC or Mac OS is also mandatory.
Having said that, this feature was long overdue, this is a great chance for OneDrive users who have to work on the go and make last-minute changes to work. The update is currently being rolled out gradually, so it might be rolled out to your account in the coming days.
