Microsoft is on an AI spree and that is reflected in its continuous effort to add AI features or at least some sort of AI treatment everywhere. Whether it's Windows 11 operating system, Edge browser or Office apps, Microsoft has been integrating AI gradually. The latest software to receive AI treatment is Notepad.
According to the latest Windows Insider Blog, Microsoft has added an AI-powered text editing feature called “Rewrite” to Notepad. The feature is now rolling out in preview to Windows Insider right now via the latest update.
What is Rewrite and how it works in Notepad
Rewrite is Microsoft’s AI-powered rewriting tool that lets users rephrase sentences, change tone and even modify the entire context. The feature is already there in Microsoft Edge where you can highlight a particular text or a paragraph and the Rewrite popup appears.
As per the blog post, the feature works in Notepad in a similar way where users are supposed to highlight text and right-click for the Rewrite dialogue box to appear. Rewrite offers three different responses and you can choose one of them and insert it into the Notepad right away.
Do note that Microsoft does require you to login into Notepad using a Microsoft account for the Rewrite AI feature to work.
Rollout
As mentioned, the feature is currently rolling out to Windows Insider Build. So, you'll need to update your Notepad, if you are already an Insider user. If you are not, you’ll have to install the entire Windows 11 operating system to get the feature. We expect the feature to roll out in the stable version later this year or early next year.
Moreover, Microsoft has currently rolled out the Rewrite feature in the US, France, UK, Canada, Italy and Germany.
