Burger King has introduced a new AI-powered chatbot called ‘Patty’ that will operate through employee headsets at hundreds of its US restaurants. The company says the tool is designed to assist staff during shifts, but one of its key functions is to monitor whether employees are using polite phrases such as “please” and “thank you” while interacting with customers.

The chatbot is part of a broader internal platform known as BK Assistant. Built using OpenAI’s technology, the system works as a voice-enabled support tool that employees can access in real time. According to the company, Patty listens to conversations at the counter and drive-thru and tracks specific hospitality phrases, including greetings like “welcome to Burger King.”

Managers can review what the company calls “friendliness scores,” which measure how often team members use approved phrases. The system is positioned as a coaching and training tool aimed at improving customer service standards across locations. Burger King’s leadership has said that the objective is to create more consistent service experiences rather than penalise workers.

Beyond monitoring politeness, Patty also functions as an operational assistant. Employees can ask it questions during their shifts, such as ingredient details for menu items or instructions on cleaning equipment. The chatbot is integrated with Burger King’s cloud-based point-of-sale system, allowing it to provide updates on out-of-stock items or machine issues. The company claims the system can refresh data across kiosks, drive-thru menus and its mobile app within minutes.

Burger King is currently piloting the technology in around 500 US restaurants. The broader BK Assistant platform is expected to expand to all US locations by the end of 2026.

The rollout has sparked debate online, with some critics questioning the implications of AI tools monitoring employee conversations. However, the company maintains that the technology is intended to support staff and streamline operations rather than replace workers.

With Patty, Burger King joins a growing list of fast-food chains experimenting with AI to manage operations and enhance customer service.
