Meta has announced updates to its Messenger platform, introducing new features aimed at improving calling experiences on its platforms. The updates include AI-powered video call backgrounds, high-definition video calling, noise suppression, and hands-free functionality.
AI Backgrounds in video calling
Users will soon be able to personalise their video call backgrounds with AI-generated images. This feature builds on Messenger’s September update that introduced AI chat themes. To use AI backgrounds, users can tap the effects icon in the sidebar during a call and select the “Backgrounds” option.
HD Video calls and noise suppression
Messenger now supports high-definition (HD) video calls by default for calls made over WiFi. Users can enable HD for cellular calls by adjusting their call settings. The update also adds noise suppression and voice isolation features to improve call clarity. These settings can be accessed in the app’s call settings menu.
Audio and video messages
Messenger users can leave audio or video messages when calls go unanswered. The new feature allows users to record messages by tapping the “Record message” button during an unanswered call.
Hands-free calling and messaging
Messenger has integrated with Siri, enabling hands-free calling and messaging. Users can prompt Siri to send messages or make calls on Messenger with voice commands, such as “Hey Siri, send a message on Messenger.”
Availability
The new features are rolling out globally, with improvements coming across video, audio, and messaging functionalities.
