iPhone 18 Pro rumoured upgrades point to smaller Dynamic Island, bigger battery, and major chip leap

This year’s iPhone lineup is expected to introduce Apple’s first foldable iPhone, but the models likely to attract the widest audience remain the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Based on current leaks and supply chain reports, Apple appears to be focusing on refinement rather than reinvention, with six key upgrades shaping the next generation of its Pro smartphones.

Design changes are expected to be subtle but noticeable. The overall size and silhouette of the iPhone 18 Pro models are likely to stay close to the current generation, but three design tweaks could help the phones feel fresh. The most talked-about change is a smaller Dynamic Island. Face ID components are expected to move further under the display, allowing Apple to shrink the cutout to its smallest size in years. On the back, Apple is reportedly moving away from the polarising two-tone finish seen on the iPhone 17 Pro, opting instead for a more unified look that better blends aluminium and glass. New colour options are also in testing, with rumours pointing to Coffee Brown, Purple, and Burgundy finishes.

Performance should see a major jump thanks to the A20 Pro chip. Every iPhone generation brings a new processor, but the A20 Pro is expected to be a particularly large leap. It is tipped to be Apple’s first chip built on a 2nm manufacturing process and to use WMCM packaging. Together, these changes should deliver stronger performance gains than usual, along with improved power efficiency and better support for on-device AI features.

Camera upgrades are another highlight. The standout rumour is the introduction of a variable aperture main camera on the iPhone 18 Pro. This would allow users to control depth of field more precisely, shifting between shallow, medium, and deep focus depending on the scene. While additional camera improvements are also expected, variable aperture would mark one of the most meaningful photography upgrades in years.

Battery life is also set to improve. The iPhone 17 Pro models already feature the largest batteries Apple has ever used, and reports suggest the company is not stopping there. One reliable leaker claims the iPhone 18 Pro Max will be thicker and heavier to accommodate a larger battery. Although the smaller Pro model has not been mentioned directly, past patterns suggest both Pro variants could see capacity increases.

Apple is also expected to refine Camera Control. Introduced with the iPhone 16, the dedicated camera button offered touch-sensitive gestures, but many users found it overly complex. For the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple is reportedly simplifying the feature by removing touch-sensitive elements and focusing on a more straightforward, button-like experience.

Finally, connectivity should improve with the introduction of Apple’s C2 modem. After debuting its first in-house modems in recent models, Apple is expected to bring its next-generation solution to the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. Early signs suggest better efficiency and battery performance compared to Qualcomm alternatives.

While the iPhone 18 Pro is still months away from launch, the overall picture is becoming clearer. Apple appears to be doubling down on the areas users care about most, including performance, battery life, camera quality, and design polish. As September approaches, more details are likely to surface, but even now, the iPhone 18 Pro is shaping up to be a solid and carefully considered upgrade.

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to arrive later this year with a refined design, a new A20 Pro chip, camera upgrades including a variable aperture, improved battery life, and Apple’s next-generation C2 modem. While details may change before launch, early reports suggest a meaningful year-over-year upgrade.
