Google is giving its AI-powered Gemini assistant a fresh new skill in Google Drive: summarising and analysing video content. Aimed at helping users extract key insights without rewatching lengthy recordings, this feature adds muscle to Drive’s growing suite of productivity tools—but it’s only available on the web for now.
After opening a video in Google Drive, users can click the Gemini icon in the top-right corner to bring up a side panel. There, Gemini will automatically generate a content summary, along with handy suggested prompts like “Outline the key takeaways” or “List action items”—particularly useful for meeting recordings or training sessions. You can also ask follow-ups such as “What are the highlights?” or dive into specifics with custom questions.
This joins an existing PDF summarisation feature and reflects Google’s broader strategy of turning Drive into an AI-enhanced knowledge hub. “Videos contain a wealth of information,” Google noted in its announcement, “but going back to watch them can be time consuming. With this update, users can leverage Gemini to get what they need from their videos much faster.”
However, don’t expect this to work across all Google interfaces just yet. Video upload and analysis aren’t supported in the standalone Gemini app—only in Drive on the web. And you’ll need the right plan to access it. The feature is rolling out over the next few weeks to users on the Google One AI Premium (now called AI Pro and above), as well as select Workspace tiers, including Business and Enterprise Standard/Plus and those with Gemini Education add-ons.
In a related update, Drive is also introducing a new analytics section in the Details panel, showing how many times a video has been opened. This metric is available to all Google Workspace and personal account users—finally giving creators and collaborators better visibility into video engagement.
