Apple might finally be ready to bring out a foldable iPhone and India could play a big role in making it happen.

According to a new Nikkei report, Apple has started working with its suppliers in Taiwan on a small test run for the device. The idea is to set up a pilot production line there, where engineers can experiment with the tricky parts of building a foldable phone, testing equipment, tweaking the design, and figuring out the right steps. Once that’s perfected, Apple plans to move large-scale production to India.

The timeline being discussed points to 2026, which means the foldable iPhone could arrive in just two years. Apple is reportedly planning to make about 95 million iPhones in that year’s lineup over 10% more than what it’s producing now—and the foldable is expected to be a big part of that push.

This would also mark another big milestone in Apple’s India journey. Over the past few years, the company has been shifting more of its manufacturing out of China, with India quickly becoming one of its most important hubs. A foldable iPhone “Made in India” would further cement that role.

For now, Apple hasn’t commented on the report, but the buzz is real. The foldable phone market is already crowded with devices from Samsung, Huawei, and others. Apple, known for waiting until a technology is fully polished, seems to believe the time is almost right to join in.

Earlier this month, the company launched its latest iPhones and even showed off a slimmer iPhone Air, keeping prices steady despite global challenges. But if this foldable device does launch in 2026, it could easily become the most talked-about iPhone in years.
