A new single-player action game called 'Tides of Annihilation' was recently announced at Sony’s State of Play February event. The game is currently under development by China-based Eclipse Glow Studio.

The developers, in a PlayStation Blog post, note that Tides of Annihilation was inspired by the straightforward idea “to capture the thrill of fighting alongside trusted allies in a single-player gaming experience”. That's why you'll have two spectral companions by your side when you go into battle.

Tides of Annihilation: Setting

Tides of Annihilation is set in a “shattered” and “mystical” post-apocalyptic London. In the game’s lore, the city was invaded by forces from another realm and you are the sole survivor.

Tides of Annihilation: The protagonist and her spectral knights

In Tides of Annihilation, you play as Gwendolyn, the sole survivor of the invasion of London and wielder of the “power of a mysterious grey fog that can manifest two spectral knights at her side”.

“Each knight has a distinct combat role. Whether it’s charging into battle, defending against attacks, or unleashing devastating combos, players will need to strategically choose which knights to summon based on their preferred gameplay style and the challenges they face.”, said the developers in the blog post.

Tides of Annihilation: Two interconnected worlds

As Gwendolyn, the player will traverse two distinct versions of the in-between world of the action game: Modern London and Medieval Fantasy Realm.

The Modern London features the “familiar landmarks stand scarred by the supernatural invasion, offering a haunting glimpse of what once was”.

In the Medieval Fantasy Realm, “Arthurian influences reign supreme, creating a medieval world of ancient magic and mythical creatures”.

As Gwendolyn, you’ll “explore these interconnected realms, uncovering clues, searching for the legendary Grail Shards, as they unravel the mystery behind the invasion”. The game’s combat system is “inspired by the ideals of courage, loyalty, and honor”, said the developers.

Tides of Annihilation: The challenge of the colossal knights

In Tides of Annihilation, you’ll find colossal knights roaming the Greater London area. The giants are interactive challenges to test you; you can “climb their immense forms, explore their surfaces, and engage in epic battles”, note the developers. If you have played Elden Ring, think of the giants in the Lands Between that were optional enemies. Giants you could easily avoid if you were riding Torrent, your spectral steed.

Tides of Annihilation: Platforms and release timeline

Tides of Annihilation is set to launch on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store). The release date is yet to be announced. The developers plan to share more about Tides of Annihilation in the coming months.
