Yashasvi Jaiswal reveals what Rohit Sharma told him before he smashed a century at Oval

India tightened their hold on the fifth Test at The Oval, thanks largely to a thrilling century from Yashasvi Jaiswal — his fourth in overseas Tests and second of the ongoing series. After India had given up a narrow 23-run first-innings lead, Jaiswal took the attack to England on a lively Day 3 pitch, shifting the momentum decisively. His 118 off 164 deliveries was an entertaining mix of aggression, elegance, and a touch of luck — England dropped him three times — but his proactive approach against the seamers was key in pushing India into a position of strength.

Opening alongside KL Rahul following England’s dramatic collapse on Day 2, Jaiswal wasted no time asserting himself. Even as Rahul departed early, the left-hander went on the offensive, showcasing a wide array of strokes. The surface, although slightly eased on the third day, still posed challenges. But Jaiswal’s sharp shot selection and intent to dominate stood out.

He brought up his hundred with a single off Gus Atkinson — a moment that drew thunderous applause from the crowd and a visibly emotional celebration as he acknowledged both the spectators and his family.

Among those in the crowd was a notable figure: former India Test captain Rohit Sharma, attending his first live match since retiring from the longest format. His presence didn’t go unnoticed. Speaking to reporters after stumps, Jaiswal shared a brief but impactful exchange with his former opening partner.

"I saw Rohit bhai and said hi. He gave me the message to keep playing," Jaiswal said.

Since making his Test debut nearly two years ago, Jaiswal has opened alongside Rohit Sharma and built a strong rapport with the veteran, both on and off the field.

At just 23, Jaiswal has already drawn from the experience of India’s most accomplished players.

"I think that's how you need to plan your game. I need to plan my game, my innings, where my shots are and where I'm going to score runs. So, of course, I keep getting all these messages and playing with the seniors as long as I have played with Rohit Bhai, Virat Bhai. So, playing with them as well helped me a lot grow as a person and seeing them, what they have done in Test cricket, how they have prepared themselves," he added.

While his hundred felt inevitable once he got going, the end of Jaiswal’s innings came in slightly frustrating fashion. Attempting a familiar upper cut — a shot that had served him well throughout — he couldn’t beat the fielder this time, and Jamie Overton made no mistake at third man off Josh Tongue’s bowling.
