On July 11, a second-stage engine on the Falcon 9 rocket faced a rare suffering, this incident took place when the Space X internet satellite named Starlink was launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
According to Space X, CEO Elon Musk, the Falcon 9 was doing well during its initial stages but when the rocket's upper stage which was carrying the 20 Stralink spacecraft faced a problem while it was low orbiting Earth. (Video potage of the Incident)
Musk on X has shared his statement regarding the issue of the upper stage malfunctioning and said that, "Upper stage restart to raise perigee resulted in an engine RUD for reasons currently unknown. Team is reviewing data tonight to understand root cause. Starlink satellites were deployed, but the perigee may be too low for them to raise orbit. Will know more in a few hours."
The company that they had made contact with around five of the satellites that with the help of the spacecraft’s ion thruster engines will be lifted off before the satellite burns up in the atmosphere.
The last time the failure faced by Falcon 9 rocket was in 2015 when it was carrying cargo of NASA to the International Space Station and disintegrated on the climb to space. In 2016 also there was a failure faced by Falcon 9.
Despite these failures, Space X has a strong track record, with 96 successful Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy launches in 2023. This flight was the 70th launch of SpaceX in the year 2024.
SpaceX is expected to conduct a detailed investigation to determine the root cause of the engine failure. This analysis might result in changes to safety protocols, manufacturing processes, or quality control measures.
Depending on what the investigation uncovers, SpaceX may have to postpone future launches to resolve any identified problems. Such delays could affect both commercial satellite launches and crewed missions.
