In a groundbreaking achievement, NASA’s SPHEREx space telescope has stitched together more than 100 individual maps of the night sky to create an unprecedented composite view of the entire universe in infrared light. The full-sky mosaic provides scientists with a bird’s-eye view of galaxies, stars, dust and cosmic structures across the universe, promising insights into its origins and evolution.
What Did SPHEREx Capture?
Launched in March 2025, SPHEREx (Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer) has completed its first all-sky survey in 102 infrared wavelengths.
Each wavelength captures unique light invisible to the human eye, revealing the universe in extraordinary depth and detail. Together, these 102 maps form a data-rich cosmic atlas that charts hundreds of millions of galaxies in three dimensions.
Unlocking the Secrets of Cosmic Inflation
One of SPHEREx’s key goals is to explore cosmic inflation, the theorised explosive expansion of the universe moments after the Big Bang. By studying subtle variations in how galaxies cluster across the sky, astronomers hope to uncover clues about the physics behind the universe’s earliest moments.
How Does This Map Change Astronomy?
SPHEREx’s all-sky survey is more than just a pretty picture. It provides a baseline for countless scientific investigations, include mapping the large-scale structure of galaxies. It will also help in studying interstellar dust and the ingredients for planets.
Tracking the evolution of stars and galaxies over billions of years, the telescope can detect faint features that single snapshots would miss. Over the next two years, SPHEREx will continue to refine its maps, creating even deeper surveys of the sky.
Collaboration Across the Cosmos
The SPHEREx map gains even more value when combined with data from other missions, such as the James Webb Space Telescope and ESA’s Euclid mission, offering an unprecedented multi-dimensional view of the cosmos. Scientists are optimistic that these combined datasets could answer fundamental questions about the universe’s evolution.
A Continuously Evolving View
This initial panoramic map is just the beginning. SPHEREx will continue scanning the sky during its two-year primary mission, layering new maps to reveal ever-fainter cosmic details.
As NASA’s Astrophysics Division notes, “Every astronomer is going to find something of value here,” underscoring the universal significance of this cosmic masterpiece.
