SpaceX has announced that the Polaris Dawn mission will be postponed until mid-August. This mission is being commanded by Jared Isaacman. The mission has been delayed by the company several times, and the current postponement is due to the company's prioritization of the Crew 9 flight mission that will take place on August 18.
The Polaris Dawn mission will also include a spacewalk and was planned to be launched earlier in 2022 launch but was later moved to 2023. This is a five-day mission and Isaacman has postponed this mission due to its complexity along with this mission he also led an Inspiration4 mission in September 2021.
The Inspiration4 mission aimed to bring civilians to space, designed to advance human health on Earth and during future long-duration spaceflights, as well as raising funds for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
This mission will take only after the successful launch of the Crew 9 flight mission, SpaceX’s director of Dragon mission management, Sarah Walker said, “There’s a lot going on on ISS right now, we opted to fly the Crew-9 mission as our next [astronaut] mission and are ready to fly Polaris Dawn in late summer, as soon as we fulfill those obligations.”
The team in this mission include four members Pilot Scott Poteet, SpaceX engineers Sarah Gills and Anna Menon. Lastly, Isaacman himself will be a part of this mission. “Turns out we have a little bit of time before Polaris Dawn launches, so I will be attending in person. Thanks for the invite Tesla,” Isaacman shared his reaction on social media.
Overall the Polaris Dawn mission is part of a series of missions funded by billionaire Isaacman who aims to achieve several milestones, including the first-ever private spacewalk. Despite the delay, the mission is still a significant step forward in private space exploration.
