On August 17, 2024, Earth will witness the close flyby of two asteroids, 2022 BF2 and 2024 OY2, as they make their way past our planet. Although neither poses any threat, their proximity presents an exciting opportunity for scientific observation.
Asteroid 2022 BF2: A Colossal Cosmic Rock
Asteroid 2022 BF2 measures approximately 290 feet across, roughly the size of a small building. It’s classified as a potentially hazardous object due to its substantial size and swift orbit. Nonetheless, there is no cause for concern as it will safely pass Earth at a distance of 3,150,000 kilometres—well beyond the Moon’s orbit.
Asteroid 2024 OY2: A Smaller but Nearer Intruder
In contrast, Asteroid 2024 OY2 is smaller, with a diameter of about 110 feet, similar to a small aircraft. It will approach Earth more closely than its counterpart, coming within 1,020,000 kilometres. Despite this closer proximity, it remains harmless.
NASA’s Watchful Eye
NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) meticulously tracks these space rocks, monitoring their trajectories to ensure no unexpected risks arise. This ongoing vigilance allows scientists to study these ancient celestial bodies, offering valuable insights into the early solar system.
While the sight of these asteroids zooming past might spark a sense of wonder, there’s no need for alarm. Both 2022 BF2 and 2024 OY2 will pass by Earth safely, providing a unique opportunity for observation without any danger.
