In a unique blend of science and community spirit, NASA’s Moon trees are flourishing across the United States. Since Artemis I’s return to Earth, over 2,000 tree seedlings have been planted at 236 locations, fostering curiosity and collaboration.

Inspiring Learning Through Space and Nature
Universities, museums, and schools hosting Moon trees are fostering unique educational experiences. At Greenfield Union School District in California, students explore outer space concepts while learning tree care. Adria Gillespie, a district science coach, shared how the project sparks curiosity and independent research among students.

At Eagle Pointe Elementary in Illinois, students paired their American Sycamore planting with a Lunar Quest club. Activities included a Moon simulation, planting ceremonies, and creating a student-led care committee. The initiative connects NASA’s missions to everyday learning.

In Toledo, Ohio, Marshall STEMM Academy integrated Moon trees into various activities. Second-grade students read stories linked to the project, while fourth graders showcased Moon tree presentations. Community engagement included tree dedications with local leaders and volunteers.

Communities Embrace Environmental and Educational Growth
The Moon trees also inspired environmental projects. ForestR, a non-profit in Castro Valley, California, planted additional trees to create a thriving ecosystem. Other locations like The Gathering Garden in North Carolina use Moon trees for educational outreach and volunteer programmes.

Roots in History, Growth for the Future
NASA’s partnership with the USDA Forest Service ensures new seedlings find homes each season until 2025. These trees connect communities with NASA’s legacy, echoing the original Apollo 14 mission that carried seeds into lunar orbit.

NASA’s Moon trees exemplify how science can nurture both education and environmental stewardship. These small seeds continue to inspire growth, learning, and collaboration.
