Palaeontologists have identified a new species, Spinosaurus mirabilis, from inland Niger, notable for its unusual scimitar-shaped crest. Led by Paul Sereno of the University of Chicago, the team believes the dinosaur may have lived a semi-aquatic life in forested river habitats, hunting fish with crocodile-like teeth. The crest, possibly once covered in colourful keratin, may have been used for display. The findings were published in Science.

A new species of Spinosaurus has been discovered in the Saharan desert of Niger, revealing an unusual skull crest and offering fresh clues about how these giant predators once lived.

A New Spinosaurus Emerges From the Sahara

Palaeontologists uncovered the fossil deep within Niger. The team was led by Paul Sereno. He works at the University of Chicago. The dinosaur has been named Spinosaurus mirabilis. The name means wonderful spine lizard. Researchers say the skull bears a striking crest. Such a feature was unseen in similar dinosaurs. Most Spinosaurus fossils came from coastal deposits.

This specimen was found far inland instead. It lay hundreds of kilometres from any ocean. The find surprised even experienced team members. Sereno described the moment as emotional and sudden. The team gathered around a laptop in camp. They examined digital images of the bones. A member built 3D skull models. The models were created using solar power. The work happened in the remote Sahara. That moment confirmed the discovery’s importance.

What The Fossil Suggests About Its Lifestyle

The skull shows interlocking spiky teeth. They resemble those of modern crocodiles. Nearby sediments held long necked dinosaur remains. Those remains were buried in ancient river deposits. Researchers believe the animal lived semi aquatic. It may have roamed forested river habitats. Sereno imagined it wading into deep waters. He compared it to a hell heron. He said it could enter two metres of water. It likely hunted fish in shallower areas. The region once supported many large fish.

The Mystery Of The Crest And Future Study

The scimitar shaped crest remains puzzling. Scientists think it was covered in keratin. Keratin also forms modern bird beaks. The crest may have displayed bright colours. It could have served a visual purpose. Its exact role remains uncertain today. Further research may reveal more answers. The findings were published in the journal Science.
