Vijayadashami 2024:  The Legend of Vijayadashami

The stories of Lord Rama and Goddess Durga are central to Vijayadashami. According to the Ramayana, Lord Rama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, battled the powerful demon Ravana, who had abducted his wife, Sita. After a fierce fight, Lord Rama emerged victorious on this day, symbolising the power of truth and righteousness.

In another narrative, Goddess Durga, who embodies divine feminine energy, fought the evil buffalo demon Mahishasura. After a ten-day battle, she defeated him on Vijayadashami, symbolising the victory of good over evil. This dual celebration reflects the powerful message of light conquering darkness.

Vijayadashami 2024: Rituals

On Vijayadashami, several rituals are observed to mark the occasion, each carrying its own meaning. Some of the prominent rituals include:

  • Shami Puja: Devotees worship the Shami tree, which is considered sacred in Hindu tradition. The tree is believed to have witnessed the Pandavas’ exile during the Mahabharata and is a symbol of victory.
  • Aparajita Puja: The term "Aparajita" means invincible, and this ritual is dedicated to Goddess Aparajita, a form of Durga, to seek her blessings for success and protection.
  • Seema Avalanghan (सीमोल्लंघन): This ancient ritual involves symbolically crossing the boundaries of one’s village or city, representing the conquest of new territory or victories in life. It signifies expanding one’s horizons and embracing new opportunities.
