What is Magh Bihu?

Magh Bihu is one of the most joyful festivals of Assam. It marks the official end of the harvest season and welcomes abundance, prosperity and warmth. While most parts of India worship Surya Dev on Makar Sankranti, Magh Bihu is dedicated to Agni Dev, the Lord of Fire, symbolising strength, protection and purity.

Uruka

Celebrations begin a day before Magh Bihu, known as Uruka, the last day of the Poush month. On this day:

  • People build temporary huts called Meji
  • These huts are made of bamboo, leaves and thatch
  • Community feasts are prepared inside the Meji
  • Families and villagers dine together, sing, celebrate and enjoy the festive night
  • Uruka reflects unity, togetherness and cultural pride.

Morning Ritual: Burning of Meji

On Magh Bihu morning, the Meji huts are burnt as part of a sacred ritual.

The ashes are scattered across farmlands, symbolising blessings for fertile soil and prosperous crops. This act reflects gratitude to nature and divine forces that support farming life.

Cultural Celebrations and Joy

Magh Bihu celebrations include:

  • Traditional Assamese dances
  • Community feasts
  • Bonfires
  • Folk music
  • Cultural gatherings

People dress in traditional attire and celebrate with full enthusiasm, keeping cultural roots alive while celebrating progress.
