Residents across the UAE are eagerly waiting for the official announcement of Eid al-Fitr 2026, the major Islamic festival that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Early astronomical calculations from the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences and Technology suggest that Eid al-Fitr in the UAE is likely to fall on March 20, 2026.
The prediction has been issued through the academy’s Sharjah Astronomical Observatory, which closely studies lunar movements and moon sighting patterns each year to estimate key Islamic calendar dates.
Eid al-Fitr 2026 date in UAE
According to astronomers, Ramadan 1447 AH is expected to complete 30 days, which means the first day of Shawwal, the Islamic month that begins with Eid al-Fitr, will likely fall on Friday, March 20, 2026 in the UAE.
However, as with all Islamic months, the final confirmation will depend on official moon sighting announcements by authorities in the UAE.
Moon sighting for Eid al-Fitr 2026
Moon sighting plays a central role in determining the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Eid celebrations. Astronomers explained that Wednesday, March 18, 2026, will mark the 29th day of Ramadan, the traditional evening when the crescent moon is usually searched for.
However, calculations show that the moon will set before sunset on that day, making it impossible to see the crescent in the western sky. Because of this, Ramadan is expected to continue, meaning Thursday, March 19, 2026, will likely complete the 30th day of the holy month.
New moon timing over Sharjah
Astronomical data released by the Sharjah Astronomical Observatory indicates that the new moon will occur at 4:24 am UAE time on March 19, 2026 over Sharjah. By sunset that day, the moon will be:
Despite these conditions, experts say the crescent will still be extremely difficult to observe from the UAE.
Why the moon may be hard to see
Astronomers have described the viewing conditions as “critical” or unfavourable for local moon sighting. Even with telescopes, spotting the crescent could be challenging. Experts note that the moon might only be detected using advanced astronomical techniques such as image stacking.
As a result, seeing the crescent with the naked eye in the UAE may not be possible on that evening.
Possible visibility in other countries
While the crescent may be difficult to observe in the UAE, astronomers say some Arab and Islamic countries located further west could have better viewing conditions. Geographical position and atmospheric conditions may allow observers in those regions to see the crescent more clearly, which often helps confirm the start of Shawwal across many countries.
When will Eid al-Fitr be confirmed?
Although astronomical predictions provide a strong indication, official confirmation of Eid al-Fitr 2026 in the UAE will depend on moon sighting committees and religious authorities. If the calculations hold true, Friday, March 20, 2026, will mark the beginning of Shawwal 1447 AH and the celebration of Eid al-Fitr across the UAE and many other Islamic countries.
For millions of residents, the festival will signal the end of Ramadan fasting and the start of days filled with prayers, family gatherings, and festive celebrations.
