Vijaya Ekadashi 2026 is a highly significant fasting day observed during the Krishna Paksha of the Phalguna month. As the name suggests, "Vijaya" means victory. Devotees believe that observing this sacred fast grants success in all endeavors and removes obstacles. This year, the festival holds immense importance for those seeking triumph over challenges.
According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Krishna narrated the glory of this Ekadashi to Arjuna, explaining that anyone who listens to or reads this Vrat Katha (story) washes away their sins and attains Vijayashree (ultimate victory). Here is the complete and ancient story of Vijaya Ekadashi:
The Legend of Vijaya Ekadashi
The significance of this fast was first described by Lord Brahma to his son, Devarshi Narada. When Narada asked about the rituals and benefits of the Phalguna Krishna Paksha Ekadashi, Lord Brahma revealed a story that dates back to the Treta Yuga, involving Lord Rama.
During his fourteen years of exile, Lord Rama lived in Panchavati with his wife Devi Sita and brother Lakshmana. It was here that the demon king Ravana abducted Mother Sita.
Overwhelmed with grief, Lord Rama and Lakshmana wandered through the forests in search of her. During their journey, they met the noble bird Jatayu, who, in his dying moments, narrated the events of the abduction before attaining liberation in Lord Rama’s lap. Later, the brothers formed an alliance with Sugriva and helped him defeat Bali.
Hanumanji, the supreme devotee, eventually located Mata Sita in the Ashok Vatika of Lanka and returned to reassure Lord Rama.
Determined to rescue Sita, Lord Rama marched towards Lanka with his vast army of monkeys (Vanara Sena) and bears. However, upon reaching the seashore, they were met with a formidable obstacle: a vast, deep ocean filled with dangerous crocodiles and aquatic predators.
Concerned about how the army would cross such a treacherous body of water, Lord Rama asked Lakshmana for a solution. Lakshmana, recognizing his brother’s divinity but understanding the human role he was playing, suggested seeking the counsel of Vakdalbhya Muni, a great sage who lived on a nearby island and held immense knowledge of the Brahma.
Following Lakshmana's advice, Lord Rama visited the ashram of Maharishi Vakdalbhya. After offering his respects, Lord Rama asked the sage for a way to cross the mighty ocean and defeat the demon king Ravana.
The sage replied, "O Rama! There is a powerful fast known as Vijaya Ekadashi. By observing this fast, you will surely cross the ocean and achieve victory in the war. It falls during the Krishna Paksha of the Phalguna month."
Conclusion and Benefits
Lord Krishna concluded the narration by telling Arjuna that this fast is potent enough to grant victory in both the material and spiritual worlds. It is said that the merit gained from listening to or reading the Vijaya Ekadashi Vrat Katha is equivalent to performing a Vajpayee Yagya.
