The Vaishno Devi Yatra, a sacred pilgrimage to the revered shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi, is a journey of faith for countless devotees from across the world. Located 14 kilometres from Katra, at an altitude of 35,000 feet, the yatra is both spiritually enriching and physically demanding. If you're planning to undertake this holy journey, here are some essential dos and don’ts to ensure a safe and fulfilling experience.
Do’s
- Obtain a Yatra Slip: Before starting the trek, visit the registration counter at Katra to get your yatra slip. This is a mandatory requirement, and you cannot proceed beyond the Ban Ganga check post without it.
- Confirm Service Charges: If you plan to hire ponies, palanquins, or porters, confirm their charges in advance. This will help you avoid misunderstandings and ensure a smooth journey.
- Maintain Cleanliness: Before offering prayers, cleanse yourself either by taking a dip at the Ban Ganga or using the water facilities available at the shrine.
- Follow the Queue: Once you reach Bhawan, ensure you have your yatra slip and join the designated queue. Wait patiently for the announcement of your slip number for the darshan.
- Collect Prasad: Take the prasad as a blessing and avoid overcrowding near Gate No. 1.
- Visit Bhairav Nath Temple: After paying your respects at the Holy Shrine, make sure to visit the Bhairav Nath Temple, as it is considered an integral part of the pilgrimage.
Don’ts- Avoid Hazardous Areas: Do not rest in areas prone to landslides. These zones are clearly marked, so stay cautious and adhere to safety instructions.
- Limit Electronics: Refrain from carrying electronic gadgets like smartphones and video cameras. If unavoidable, deposit them at the designated storage area.
- Be Respectful: Show compassion to fellow pilgrims and extend help to anyone in need. Respect the sentiments and beliefs of others.
- Secure Valuables: Avoid carrying valuable jewellery or expensive items during the yatra to prevent loss or theft.
- Maintain Cleanliness: Do not litter or dispose of plastic waste carelessly. Uphold the sanctity of the pilgrimage site.
- No Tobacco or Alcohol: The use of tobacco and alcohol is strictly prohibited in and around the shrine premises.
- Avoid Tipping: Do not offer tips or dakshina to temple staff. If you wish to donate, use the official donation boxes.
- Old Route for Ponies: If you need pony rides, opt for the old route, as the new route does not accommodate them.
- No Sloganeering: Chanting slogans inside the cave shrine is not allowed. Maintain the peace and spiritual atmosphere of the site.
By following these guidelines, your Vaishno Devi Yatra will be a safe, peaceful, and spiritually enriching experience.
