Parashurama Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Lord Parashurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 29, 2025. This sacred occasion falls during the Shukla Paksha Tritiya of the Hindu month of Vaishakha. It is believed that Parashurama was born during Pradosh Kala (the evening twilight), and therefore, the day when Tritiya Tithi prevails during Pradosh Kala is chosen for Parashurama Jayanti celebrations.

Significance of Parashurama Jayanti

Parashurama Jayanti holds great significance in Hinduism. Lord Parashurama is believed to have appeared on Earth to relieve it of the burden caused by corrupt and unrighteous rulers. His mission was to protect dharma (righteousness) by destroying the sinful and oppressive kings who had exploited the Earth's resources and failed to fulfil their responsibilities.

Unlike other avatars of Lord Vishnu, Parashurama is considered to be immortal. According to Hindu tradition, he still resides on Earth. Because of his continuing presence, he is not worshipped in the same manner as Lord Rama or Lord Krishna, the seventh and eighth avatars of Vishnu.

In southern India, the holy site of Pajaka near Udupi is particularly associated with Parashurama. A significant temple dedicated to him stands there. Along India's western coastline, several temples also honour Lord Parashurama's legacy.

Moreover, according to the Kalki Purana, Parashurama will serve as the martial guru of Shri Kalki, the prophesied tenth and final avatar of Lord Vishnu. Fascinatingly, it is not the first time Parashurama has encountered another incarnation. As narrated in the Ramayana, he once attended the betrothal ceremony of Sita and Lord Rama, where he met the seventh avatar of Vishnu.
