Top Harris adviser says they ‘dug out of a deep hole but not enough’

David Plouffe, the longtime adviser to former President Barack Obama turned top Harris aide, wrote Wednesday that the Democratic operation “left it all on the field for their county” but eventually it was not enough against Trump.

“We dug out of a deep hole but not enough,” Plouffe wrote. “A devastating loss. Thanks for being in the arena, all of you.”

Plouffe’s comments come at a time when some Democrats are starting to blame President Biden for not stepping away earlier, constraining Harris to a truncated campaign.

US President Joe Biden has called President-elect Trump to congratulate him on his election victory and to invite him to the White House to discuss the transition.

The White House said staff would coordinate a date “in the near future.” Biden plans to address the nation on the election results, which will have sharp implications for his legacy on Thursday. Biden also spoke with Vice President Harris to congratulate her on her campaign.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday hailed US Vice President elect-JD Vance’s victory in the presidential election as a historic moment as it will catapult a woman of Telugu heritage, Usha Chilukuri Vance, as the Second Lady of the United States.

Eminent Indian Americans on Wednesday welcomed the re-election of Donald Trump as the 47th president of the United States and assured to work with him on several issues, including that of the US-India relationship.

“Congratulations to President Donald Trump on his decisive victory. We are in a golden age of American innovation and are committed to working with his administration to help bring the benefits to everyone,” Google CEO Sundar Pichai said.

“The American people have spoken. Congratulations to President Trump on a strong win. Now, it’s time for the American people to come together, pray for our country, and start the process of a peaceful transition,” former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley said.

“That begins with Kamala Harris conceding. You can’t just talk about unity in a campaign, you have to show it regardless of the outcome,” Haley said.

“What a great day for America! Let’s take a moment to celebrate. Then begins the hard work to get our country back on track!” said former Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal.

“It’s almost morning in America,” said Vivek Ramaswamy, a Trump confidant. “Now let’s go save a country,” he said.

New York-based prominent entrepreneur Al Mason said: “God saved Trump from two assassination attempts - there is a reason for the same. Trump is going to be a messiah for the American people and the rest of the world. There will be a very prosperous America, a safer world free of wars. In fact, a golden era begins for the United States of America.” Dr Krishna Reddy, chair of Indian American Friendship Council, congratulated Trump for the super victory. “This is the beginning of super US-India relations and together we keep the world safe again. This is the great strength of Indian Americans to build a robust economy again and Indian Americans are a great part of this success,” he said.

President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi of Egypt has spoken with President-elect Donald Trump to congratulate him on his election, according to a statement from the Egyptian leader’s office.

El-Sissi has affirmed: “Egypt looks forward to completing the joint work with President Trump during his new term … in a way that benefits the Egyptian and American peoples and achieves stability, peace and development in the Middle East,” the statement said.

El-Sissi cultivated close ties with Trump during his previous term. He was the first foreign leader to congratulate Trump when he won 2016 elections.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman congratulated Donald Trump on winning the U.S. presidential election in a phone call on Wednesday, the Saudi state news agency said.

The prince told Trump that Riyadh hoped to the strengthen the two countries' strategic relations, it said.

Vice President Kamala Harris called President-elect Donald Trump Wednesday to congratulate him on his election victory, a senior Harris aide said.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the call.

The aide said Harris discussed the importance of a peaceful transfer of power with Trump ahead of her planned concession speech Wednesday afternoon.

Republican Donald Trump defeated Democrat Kamala Harris to win Tuesday's U.S. presidential election. He will take office on Inauguration Day on Jan. 20, 2025.

Here is a timeline of events between now and then:

- Nov. 26: Trump, the first sitting or former U.S. president to be convicted of a crime, is due to be sentenced in a Manhattan hush money case where he was found guilty of falsifying documents to cover up a payment to silence a porn star. Trump has denied wrongdoing. Sentencing was originally due to take place on Sept. 18.

- Dec. 11: States must submit certified slates of presidential electors by this date to the Archivist of the United States as part of a 2022 federal law intended to avoid a repeat of the chaos after Trump's attempts to overturn his 2020 defeat.

- Dec. 17: Electors, who together form the Electoral College, meet in their respective states and the District of Columbia to select the president and vice president.

- Dec. 25: The electoral votes must be received by this date by the president of the Senate - a role held by the vice president, currently Harris - and the Archivist.

2025

- Jan. 6: Vice President Harris presides over the Electoral College vote count at a joint session of Congress, announces the results and declares who has been elected.

Ahead of the count on Jan. 6, 2021, then-President Trump lambasted his vice president, Mike Pence, for refusing to try to prevent Congress from certifying President Joe Biden's victory over Trump.

On that day, the U.S. Capitol was stormed by Trump supporters trying to stop the count. Biden's win was certified early the next day.

Congress has since passed reforms which require approval of one-fifth of the House and Senate to consider a challenge to a state's results – a much higher bar than existed before, when at least one member each in the Senate and the House of Representatives could together trigger a challenge.

- Jan. 20: Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance will take their respective oaths of office during a swearing-in ceremony that is due to begin at 12 p.m. ET (1700 GMT).

With Donald Trump’s victory in Michigan, he completes a sweep of the Great Lakes “Blue Wall” states that Kamala Harris had considered her smoothest path to victory.

Trump managed the same sweep of Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania in 2016, when he defeated Hillary Clinton. President Joe Biden outpaced Trump in those states in 2020.

Unlike Clinton’s campaign in 2016, Harris campaigned heavily across the region through September and October. The vice president spent all day Sunday in Michigan, but she was unable to match Biden’s level of support, most notably in Wayne County, where Detroit offers a trove of Democratic votes.

Trump was active in the region, as well, and he improved on his 2020 margins across the three key states.

French President Emmanuel Macron had a “very good discussion” with Donald Trump about the world’s major crises during a 25-minute phone call, Macron’s office said.

Macron expressed his views on the “importance” for the U.S. to reckon with the European Union and both leaders had talks on Ukraine and the Middle East, Macron’s office said.

The French President said he was making himself available to continue to work with Trump on these issues and make efforts towards peace and stability, according to his office.

“The conversation was warm and cordial,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said in a statement. “The Prime Minister congratulated Trump on his election victory, and the two agreed to work together for Israel’s security. The two also discussed the Iranian threat.”

Netanyahu’s office said he was among the first world leaders to call Trump after his victory.

Trump has vowed to bring peace to the Middle East at a time when Israel is at war with Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon and has recently traded fire with Iran. The president-elect, who was a staunch supporter of Israel during his previous term, has not said how he will do it.

Former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, who became one of Trump’s more vocal challengers in the 2024 Republican primary before eventually endorsing him, said on her radio show Wednesday that he “defied gravity” with his win.

“He got through two assassination attempts. He got through two impeachments, he got through numerous indictments, and America still elected him because, at the end of the day, they knew what they were getting with Donald Trump. And that’s what they wanted to see,” she said.

Haley called it “a great moment for democracy.”

Harris was scheduled to speak at Howard on Tuesday night and the atmosphere at the event was jubilant as initial results rolled in. As the night dragged on and it became clear that Harris would not defeat Trump, her supporters grew dour.

Cedric Richmond, Harris’ campaign co-chair, then told the audience they “won’t hear from the vice president tonight.”

In a statement, former President George W. Bush said he and his wife, Laura, “join our fellow citizens in praying for the success of our new leaders at all levels of government.”

Some top former Republican officials, including Bush’s vice president, Dick Cheney, had endorsed Harris. But Bush remained neutral.

Bush also thanked “President Biden and Vice President Harris for their service to our country.”

“The strong turnout in this election is a sign of the health of our republic and the strength of our democratic institutions,” said Bush, who called the election a “free, fair, safe, and secure election.”

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris will deliver a speech conceding defeat in the presidential election to Donald Trump at 6 p.m. (2300 GMT) on Wednesday, two sources told Reuters.

"Big congratulations to our 45th and now 47th President on an extraordinary political comeback and decisive victory. No nation has bigger opportunities. Wishing Donald Trump all success in leading and uniting the America we all love," wrote Jeff Bezos on X.

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI on Wednesday expressed “sincere congratulations” and “best wishes” to President-elect Donald Trump, referencing the latter’s 2020 decision to back Morocco’s stance in the disputed Western Sahara.

“Mr. Trump’s resounding success in these elections is a tribute to his patriotism and rewards his commitment to upholding the best interests of the United States,” the king wrote in a letter published by the state press agency, MAP.

The 61-year-old monarch said Moroccans were grateful for Trump’s move to shift the United States’ longstanding position in the Western Sahara, a disputed territory that Morocco considers its southern provinces and the United Nations considers “non-self-governing.”

He added that Morocco — which normalized relations with Israel as part of the 2020 Abraham Accords — was committed to allying with the United States to address “increasingly complex regional and global challenges.”

Morocco hopes Trump follows through on the State Department’s yet-to-be-fulfilled 2020 commitment to build a consulate in the disputed territory.

The leader of Hezbollah said Wednesday the results of the US presidential election will have no impact on any possible ceasefire deal to end the Israel-Hezbollah war.

"We don't base our expectations for a halt of the aggression on political developments... Whether (Kamala) Harris wins or (Donald) Trump wins, it means nothing to us," he said in a pre-recorded speech before Trump announced his victory.

Donald Trump has promised sweeping action in a second administration.

The former president and now president-elect often skipped over details but through more than a year of policy pronouncements and written statements outlined a wide-ranging agenda that blends traditional conservative approaches to taxes, regulation and cultural issues with a more populist bent on trade and a shift in America’s international role.

Trump’s agenda also would scale back federal government efforts on civil rights and expand presidential powers.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau congratulated Trump in a post on the social platform X and included a picture of the two of them in the White House during the President-elect’s first term.

“The friendship between Canada and the U.S. is the envy of the world. I know President Trump and I will work together to create more opportunity, prosperity, and security for both of our nations,” Trudeau posted.

Trump as president called Trudeau “weak” and “dishonest” and attacked Canada’s vital trade. He threatened tariffs on cars and imposed them on steel. The unprecedented tone against one of Washington’s closest allies left a bitter taste, and most Canadians were relieved that Trump was defeated in 2020.

In Delaware, voters made history by electing Democrat Sarah McBride, the first openly transgender member of Congress.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani on Wednesday congratulated Donald Trump for winning the US presidential election and said he wanted to strengthen ties with the United States.

"Iraq reaffirms its steadfast commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with the United States, grounded in mutual respect and shared interests," he said in a statement, adding, "We look forward to this new phase as a beginning to deepen cooperation across various sectors."

Iran's currency fell on Wednesday to an all-time low as Donald Trump clinched the US presidency again, signalling new challenges ahead for Tehran as it remains locked in the wars raging in the Middle East.

The rial traded at 703,000 rials to the dollar, traders in Tehran said. The rate could still change throughout the day. Iran's Central Bank could flood the market with more hard currencies as an attempt to improve the rate, as it has done in the past. The slide comes as the rial already faces considerable woes over its sharp slide in value — and as the mood on the streets of Tehran among some darkened.

Russia said Wednesday it had "no illusions" about a second Donald Trump administration but would work with him and seek to achieve its "goals" in Ukraine when he takes office.

"We are under no illusions about the American President-elect," Moscow's foreign ministry said in a statement. It added it will "work with" a new US administration and prioritise achieving its "set goals" in Ukraine, saying its conditions on ending the conflict "are unchanged and are well known in Washington".

Kamala Harris, the daughter of Indian and Jamaican immigrants, failed to notch a big first in American politics when she lost to her Republican rival Donald Trump in the race to the White House. The Democratic leader's defeat to Trump in a bitterly contested election shattered her dream to become the first woman President of the United States. Harris got her big chance when President Joe Biden abandoned his own bid for reelection in July following his poor performance in a nationally televised debate with Trump. Biden endorsed Harris as the party nominee in the election.

A recent report by Barclays suggested that should Donald Trump return to the White House, it could lead to a "full-blown trade war," and that may lead to China contemplating a larger stimulus package. Trump has proposed implementing tariffs above 60 per cent on imports from China and ending the country's most-favoured-nation trading status. China reportedly exports over $400 billion worth of goods to the US each year, along with additional hundreds of billions in components for products purchased by Americans from other countries.

Stock markets rallied more than 1 per cent on Wednesday with benchmark Sensex soaring 901 points on heavy buying in IT and pharma shares as Donald Trump is all set to win the US presidential elections. Extending its gains to the second day, the BSE Sensex jumped 901.50 points or 1.13 per cent to settle at 80,378.13. During the day, it soared 1,093.1 points or 1.37 per cent to 80,569.73.

Russia said on Wednesday that relations with the United States were at a historic low, but the Kremlin was open to dialogue and would see what happens if Donald Trump returns to the White House in January. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he was not aware of any plans by President Vladimir Putin to congratulate Trump who has declared he had won the US election. "Let's not forget that we are talking about an unfriendly country that is directly and indirectly involved in a war against our state," he said, referring to US support for Ukraine.

The Congress on Wednesday congratulated Donald Trump on his presidential polls victory, with party president Mallikarjun Kharge saying "we look forward to working closely with the United States for global peace and prosperity". Former President Trump was projected to win the US presidency for a second term in one of the greatest political comebacks in American history, cruising past his Democratic rival Kamala Harris.

Although, Democrat Kamala Harris does not appear to be winning the US presidential election, she will make a comeback as she is a fighter, said residents of Thulasendrapuram, the village of her maternal ancestors, on Wednesday. "We were hoping for her victory and had planned celebrations bigger than Deepavali. But success and failure are part of life. It was a tough fight, and you must admire her fighting spirit. She is a fighter and will make a comeback," J Sudhakar, DMK Tiruvarur district representative and Thulasendrapuram village leader, told PTI.

Iranians' livelihoods will not be affected by the US elections, government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani was reported as saying on Wednesday after Donald Trump declared victory in the presidential vote. Arab and Western officials have told Reuters Trump may reimpose his "maximum pressure policy" through heightened sanctions on Iran's oil industry and empower Israel to strike its nuclear sites and conduct "targeted assassinations".

Arizona voters have approved a ballot amendment enshrining a right to abortion in the State Constitution, according to The Associated Press, joining other states that have pushed back against unpopular abortion bans passed in the two years since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer was among the first world leaders to issue a congratulatory message soon after Donald Trump addressed a rally in Florida to claim victory in the US presidential race on Wednesday. Starmer said the "special relationship" between the UK and the US would continue to prosper under the new American administration after Trump clinched crucial battleground states in the US overnight.

Vice President Kamala Harris carried Minnesota on Wednesday on a ticket with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, extending a winning streak for Democrats that goes back 52 years.

Donald Trump promised that he would “not rest until we have delivered the strong safe and prosperous America". “Every single day,” Trump said, “I will be fighting for you with every breath in my body.”

Vice president Kamala Harris will address the nation tomorrow, according to her campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond. This announcement comes as election results continue to be tallied across the United States. Speaking to a gathering, Richmond emphasized that the vote counting process is ongoing. "We still have votes to count. We still have states that have not been called yet," Cedric Richmond said

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump took the stage at Palm Beach County Convention Center to deliver his victory address. "America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate, we have taken back the control of the Senate," said Trump.

CNN has called Pennsylvania for Trump, the third swing state he has won. Pennsylvania, which has the highest 19 electoral votes among the seven so-called battleground states, is the biggest prize of all. To borrow an Indian poll phrase, the road to White House runs through Pennsylvania and Trump is on that road easy and fast.

The New York Times is calling it a “shift to the right”. In every state that has counted most of the votes, Trump has improved his performance from 2020 when he was defeated by Joe Biden.

According to CNN projections, Donald Trump wins the third swing state Pennsylvania.

Voters in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, the more conservative of the state’s two congressional districts, delivered an electoral vote to Republican Donald Trump on Wednesday. Maine is one of two states that divide their electoral votes with two votes going to the statewide winner and one vote apiece to the winner of reach congressional district.

US lawmaker and GOP leader Richard McCormick said Trump and PM Modi enjoy a “good friendship” and could help the global economy grow. “They're both very business savvy. They're both very pro-business. I think they could grow the world economy together. I think India is going to have the third-largest GDP in the world. within the next five years. That plays well to our trade, that plays well to what standards we have, how we view the world. India is a great ally, a strategic ally in that region,” he said.

• The Trump campaign put a great deal of effort to win support of Black and Latino voters and early indications were that it was paying off, a Reuters report said. In the battleground state of North Carolina, exit polls showed Trump improving his share of the Black vote to 12 percent from 5 percent in 2020. He got the support of 20 percent of Black male voters, the poll said. But his support among white voters seems to have dropped five percentage points.
• In Pennsylvania, perhaps the biggest prize of the day, Trump's support among white voters dropped three percentage points from four years ago, the Edison national poll said, and he was down four among white male voters. According to the Edison poll, Trump's support among Latino voters jumped 18 percent from four years ago, the report said.
